Pacquiao camp issues may prove costly for Margarito

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
There have been several reports from numerous scribes, including from Freddie Roach himself, that say that this has been the worst training camp that Pacquiao has ever had. Freddie Roach however has recently changed his tune as Pacquiao seems more and more focused now than he had previously been. The camp in the Philippines did not go well, and things didn't go much better once they all returned to Los Angeles.

Trips to Vegas to campaign for Harry Reid, singing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and a host of other distractions has forced Roach to lock down the Wild Card like this writer has never seen before. It seems to have worked because during the past week or so, Roach has been singing a more positive tune.

In Oxnard, California the Margarito camp has been cruising along, and the former champ looks very good. No distractions, just hard work, good focus, and a lot of confidence. This will all be needed in a big way on November 13th.

Pacquiao seems to be right on target now, and there's a chance that he's tired of hearing about how distracted he is, and how he may lose this fight. Pacquiao is usually such a positive well mannered guy, nobody has really seen him display any anger in the ring. It's possible that he may unleash his anger inside of the ring this time and Margarito gets the brunt of this anger.

I was at the fights in Hattiesburg, MS last night. The legendary Thomas Hearns was in attendance. There were a lot of fans waiting to get their photo taken with the former champ, so I asked a few what their thoughts were on Pacquiao Vs. Margarito. I spoke with Earnie from Gulfport, MS who is an amateur boxing coach, “Pacquiao is usually such a mild mannered guy, I don't think I have ever seen him angry ever. If he is mad at all of this negative reporting about his camp, Margarito may be in for a really short night, or a long one depending on how you look at it.”

If Pacquiao was actually to lose this fight, he will be subjected to a lot of complaints from his fans about his schedule in politics, and how it impacts his boxing career. However, a Pacquiao loss may bring Mayweather Jr out of hiding, and perhaps the fans will get to see the big fight after all. A Pacquiao win over Margarito may keep Mayweather away, or maybe Mayweather will surprise us all and step up and finally give the world what it wants.

Pacquiao “slaps” Ariza to reality

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
HOLLYWOOD—In a moment of idleness, Manny Pacquiao will often creep up on members of his entourage from behind and give them an open-fisted strike in their behinds.

Sometimes they find it funny, sometimes they don’t. Alex Ariza got stung by one of those slaps. And he feels one thing—beyond the pain—when the Pacman is in such a playful mood.

Manny Pacquiao is ready to do battle with Antonio Margarito for the World Boxing Council light middleweight crown on Nov, 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“He (Pacquiao) is definitely in top shape,” said the strength and conditioning coach, who joined Team Pacquiao early in 2008, on Friday. “He looks good, his quickness is there.”

Ariza, a Colombian, also shrugged off concerns about Margarito’s edge in height (4 1/2 inches) and reach (6 inches).

“I’ve heard a lot of concerns about his (Margarito’s) size, but I think, you know sometimes one complements the other”—meaning Pacquiao’s smaller frame will be compensated by his uncanny speed.

With barely eight days to go before the fight, Ariza wants to make sure that Pacquiao stays in peak form, not only through training but also through proper nutrition.

“We increased the fat intake and lowered the protein,” said Ariza. “We also increased the carbohydrates. It’s about making the adjustments needed to fuel him for the fight Saturday night.

Ariza said that if Pacquiao weighs in at 148 on Friday, he’s going to climb the ring at the same weight.

“Because his metabolism will not allow him to get bigger,” said Ariza.

“I don’t want him to be at 150 because that’s not his comfortable weight.”

And Pacquiao maybe right on the dot as during an unofficial weigh in at Wild Card Friday, he tipped the scales at 150 pounds with his clothes and shoes on.

Pacman breaking jinx vs Margarito

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
“Do you know that Manny Pacquiao will be breaking a jinx—and therefore making history again—if he wins the WBC super welterweight title against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Texas?”

My boxing IQ was being tested by Teddy Reynoso, a rabid boxing fan and researcher who works for the LUWA.
Of course I failed the test, just as three boxing authorities I consulted did when I asked them the same question later. Teddy’s research went so far back in time, nobody clearly remembers.

Neither were the boxing enthusiasts too interested whether or not the Pacman was breaking a jinx. To them, this achievement was a triviality.

To Teddy however, the discovery was big news. Immediately after our conversation, he e-mailed a three-page, single-spaced document containing the result of his extensive research.

I went through the manuscript and got even more confused. He wrote about Filipino boxers as far back as the 1930s who failed to win a title in the super welterweight, the junior middleweight and the light middleweight divisions.

The youngest boxing scribe I consulted explained that the weight limit of all three divisions is 154 lb, except that they go by different names, depending on the world boxing association organizing the fight.

He also said that the Philippines already had a world champion in that weight category: Ceferino “Bolo” Garcia, circa 1939.

“Why don’t you just write about the fight last night between Brian Viloria and Sor Veerapol of Thailand, instead of ‘The Jinx.’ That would be more interesting,” the scribe said.
* * *
Last Friday’s “Fight Fest” may be an indication that “The Hawaiian Punch” is on his way to a successful comeback.

“If you ask me, I saw 70 percent of the old Viloria last night,” the young scribe said. “Brian looked better and he was more spectacular than the last time he fought against Cesar Soto, where the fight went the full stretch and with Brian ultimately winning by decision.”

After this fight, I remember asking Brian where his deadly knockout punch which brought him fame and glory had gone. Brian promised to train really hard for his next fight to get it back.

Last Friday’s seventh round TKO of Veerapol was a clear indication that Brian had kept his promise. The young boxing scribe credits the boxer’s impressive progress to his new trainer Mario Morales, who used to train world champ Edwin Valero.

“Remember Valero? He visited the Philippines once with David Diaz to attend a big party in GenSan hosted by Pacquiao. I can’t recall if it was Manny’s birthday celebration,” the scribe said.

I remember meeting Diaz in a small luncheon, but at that time, Valero had not arrived in the Philippines yet.
“Before his untimely death at age 24, Valero had logged an ultra-impressive record of 27 wins, all of them via knockout, and no loss. His first 18 wins were by first-round knockouts.”

My scribe-friend said if Valero were alive today, he would be facing Pacquiao instead of Margarito. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had been arranging for a Pacquiao-Valero fight, according to him.
The Venezuelan boxer committed suicide early this year by hanging himself after he was accused of killing his wife.
* * *
Late yesterday afternoon, just as I was putting the finishing touches to this column, I got a call from the young boxing scribe I consulted. He said Teddy Reynoso was right, after all. No Filipino boxer had won a world title in the 154-pound weight division. Ceferino Garcia took the middleweight (160 lb) world title via a knockout over American title holder Fred Apostoli on Oct. 2, 1939.

Margarito v Pacquiao: “Ain’t nothing, but a party”

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
I remember I was at the weigh in for Lennox Lewis’s fight with David Tua, and I had traveled from Australia, with big hopes for “The Tuaman” to do some serious damage with his left hook to the Englishman’s jaw. With high hopes beaming, i followed team Tua into the negotiations room, to listen to the to-ing and fro ing of each camps conditions of the fight, for the following day. When everything was agreed, we continued through to the media centre, and I asked the Tua camp, “what is your plan of attack, and do you have a plan B. Plan A was as expected, “hit him as hard as we can with the left hook, to knock that fucker out” Plan B was a bit of a worry, “hit him square in the balls” As I left to go and talk with Lewis’s team, all I could hear was Lennox’s people saying to him, “ain’t nothing, but a party.” They were right.

That little anecdote brings me to this fight between Margarito and Pacquiao. It seems to me that there is no plan B, from Team Margarito, just what we expect from the 3 time world champion. If we know whats coming, you can be sure Team Pacquaio know.

What’s coming is, Margarito will throw over a thousand punches. [whether he lands them, is debatable.] Margarito will come to fight, and will come to win. Margarito is confident of beating a smaller man, and Margarito knows he has had the best training camp ever.

Here is my analysis of what i see in both champions.

PACQUIAO.

* speed of hand, foot and body.
* Big fight experience.
* southpaw stance. [ Margarito losses from southpaws, Paul Williams, Daniel Santos, Rodney Jones
* fighting at catchweight.[ 150ibs]
* power.
* has beaten, out boxed fighters with long reach, in Dela Hoya, and Clottey.
* speed. [key to winning this fight]

PACQUIAO. against

* Has been knocked out to the head and body.
* Smaller 5’6 170cm reach to Margaritos 185cm
* Tends to leave himself open to the punch. [his defence is his offence]
* Will be around 6 pounds lighter than Margarito on fight night.
* Coming close to end of his career/ thoughts of retirement.?

MARGARITO fors.

* Bigger body, and height 5’11
* Strength
* Longer reach
* Good jab
* Good long right hand
* Good uppercut
* Confidence in himself
* Tough
* Good body puncher
* Throws volumes of punches
* He knows this is his chance of a lifetime.

MARGARITO against.

* Knocked out tko 9 from Mosley [ only stoppage tko at 147]
* Can be out boxed
* Slow to react.
* Methodical and predictable combinations
* Drops his left hand too low
* Not great fighting southpaws.

With this fight just a week away, the work has been done. Pacquiao has, like always trained to fight the best he can, and Margarito has thanked his lucky stars that he has been given this opportunity, and has left no stone unturned, to make the most of the chance he has been given. Margarito wont change the way he fights, not now, not ever.

MY ANALYSIS WRAP UP.

Margarito will come out with the long jab, trying to set up the long right hand power punch, trying to push Pacquiao backwards to the ropes, to then throw as many hooks and body shots in, followed by his big uppercut. If he is successful, and Pacquiao plays along trying to get in close, then the man from Tijuana will give Pacquiao big problems. The body shot is what Margarito has been training for.

Easier said than done.

I see Pacquiao using his speed, and footwork and angles, in and away, throwing hooks all night, to open up Margarito to drop his left hand, so Pacquiao can land his right hand all night long, while peppering Margarito with lefts, and his own body shots, to slow down, anything Margarito has left in the final stages of the fight. If Pacquiao does this, he could win by tko in the 11th round. Should be a great fight for the fans.

Pacquiao knows best

MANNY knows.

That’s basically all I really have to say regarding whether seven-time world champion Manny Pacquiao is ready for his fight against Antonio Margarito or not.

A lot has been said about his current conditioning, since he had a very disorganized training camp this time around.

There were a lot of distractions during the first stage of his preparations, because he chose to attend to some matters for congress, personal matters and even had a meeting with the President.

He would motor down to Manila constantly from Baguio, expending energy he should be conserving for training.

Add the additional frequent basketball sessions, coupled by his missing a few workouts here and there, and you understand why his trainer, Freddie Roach mentioned that this was their worst camp ever.

Roach never wanted to train in the Philippines from Day 1, since he knew that the distractions were all over the place, but Manny is the boss and camp opened in Metro Manila first before moving to the City of Pines.

Now that the second phase of the training has begun and they are in Los Angeles, they have been able to catch up on his training, and Roach has been saying that Pacquiao is finally starting to resemble the “real” Manny.

The speed is finally up to where it should be and they need to just fine-tune everything leading up to the final 10 days of preparation.

While everyone was worried, Manny knew what he needed to do to get ready for Margarito.

He wouldn’t take Margarito lightly, since he knew that the Mexican was bigger and supposedly stronger.

The key to all his recent wins has been his unmatched speed, which just overwhelms his opponents.

Without this asset, he would be a sitting duck for Margarito.

More than a number of his followers expressed concern during the first few weeks of training, with promoter Bob Arum airing his displeasure publicly when he visited Manila recently, but they are now starting to feel at ease.

I’ve known Manny for quite awhile, and I even had a chance to spend some time with him in Singapore a few months ago, and one thing that has really impressed me is the fact that he really knows what he is doing.

In fact, more so now than ever before.

He shared with me a lot of his plans in Congress, and he didn’t only speak of what he wanted to do, but he had laid out concrete ways to meet those plans.

He has become such an expert at time management that he is able to fit in an incredible amount into the designated hours allocated for a day.

So everyone, rest assured that Pacman is on track for his coming fight.

Manny knows.

Team Pacquiao and Team Margarito talk retirement and respect as Dallas looms

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
The camps of both Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito have been covered in depth heading into their November 13th bout at Cowboys Stadium. By this point in time all of the hard work during training is in the rearview and the teams will make their way from Southern California to Dallas, Texas in just a few days time.

While there seemed to be some obvious harsh feelings coming from both camps last month, the tone during yesterday’s conference call was much more subdued as everyone realizes the need for any amount of trash talk is obsolete by this point. Pacquiao, his trainer Freddie Roach, promoter Bob Arum, Margarito and his trainer Robert Garcia all seem to be simply relishing the opportunity that awaits next weekend in one of the year’s biggest fights.

The two men are at different points in their careers. Pacquiao's last two years in the sport have been the stuff of legends as he has risen in weight and tore through a formidable list of opposition but there has been whispers that his time in the sport could be coming to a close if he can't secure a fight with Las Vegas based Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year. Margarito saw his career stumble after he was discovered to have elements of plaster of paris in his hand wraps prior to his January 2009 loss to Shane Mosley as was subsequently suspended by the California State Athletic Commission. He has been attempting to pick up the pieces ever since and seems to be riding a wave of confidence with Garcia in his corner.

During the conference call there were highlights such as Pacquiao’s future in the sport, Arum’s thought on promoting Pacquiao over the years, Margarito’s confidence heading into the clash, Roach’s plan on defeating the Tijuana fighter and much more.

This is what all parties had to say…

Freddie Roach on training in the Philippines…
“In the Philippines we had a pretty good training camp. It wasn’t our best. We did miss one day for the president but that is unusual. Comparative-wise we have never had a bad training camp. He is in great shape and since we have been here in the States at the Wild Card he has been running the mountains to the Hollywood sign and so-forth. Everything is on track now and we are 100% ready for the fight. Manny told me he will not disappoint me and I know that’s true I expect great things. He sparred nine rounds yesterday with three different opponents and did very well and we are starting to taper back now, cutting back each day and saving it for the fight at this moment.”

Bob Arum on the financial success of the fight…
“The response to the ticket sales has been great. We are tracking well ahead of where we were at the Clottey fight and I’m very optimistic. It’s a great area. The ball team in the World Series and the Cowboys trying to right themselves and there are great fans in the North Texas area. I think we will exceed it. The first fight we did 50,000 and change and I think this fight we will exceed it. I think we will do over 60,000.”

Freddie Roach on the up-and-up…
“I’m a professional and I do my job. There will be no tampering with hand-wraps this time. It’s not an issue – it’s in the past. We are past that now. We are fighting on equal terms. It helps the fight in general because of the press and the notoriety of the fight. But it doesn’t change the fight at all; it will be on the up-and-up. Both will be equal in hand-wraps and that’s the way it is.”

Manny Pacquiao on the size difference…
“In our training today we started hard against big guys, taller to give them that advantage. We had plans for this camp to train for him and prepared ourselves with that strategy so we will have no problem with him. We do our best in training. With our strategy, we are not worried about the size. I believe I can fight the bigger guys even though I am small compared to them but we always believe in our talent.

In the news: Behind the scenes in Camp Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao not thinking of retirement just yet…
“No, the political career has not affected my boxing career. I have time for politics and I have time for boxing. Right now my focus is still into boxing. Once I get into training there is full focus on the fight so I am ready. No retirement. Not yet. I can still fight.”

Freddie Roach on how to defeat Margarito…
“I think we will overwhelm him with the punches he will land on him with the fast hands and combinations. In eight or nine rounds I think we will break him down. Margarito throws a lot of punches and he makes too many mistakes to beat us. He has bad habits and we are going to take advantage of all of them.”

Bob Arum on Pacquiao’s impact…
“I have never promoted a fighter before that has so captivated a country and a people the way Manny has. He is idolized and followed by every Filipino, whether he is in the Philippines or anywhere else around the world. It is a phenomenon like I have never seen before. I promoted 25 Ali fights and other fights for Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and George Foreman, but I have never seen the enthusiasm of a people towards a fighter the way I see the enthusiasm for Manny Pacquiao.

Antonio Margarito staying away from the negative…
“I try not to dwell on the negative. I know people will ask the questions and I have to answer the questions and I have no problem with them. To me, right now all I am concentrating right now is on the fight. I know it is going to be asked but for me I have to concentrate on the fight. Everything is in the past and I can’t wait until November 13.”

Bob Arum’s opinion on the Margarito hand wrap scandal…
“Everybody is entitled to their opinion. I am a trained lawyer and I believe in justice and I believe that Antonio Margarito was not treated fairly by the California Commission. I believe that Antonio Margarito did not know anything of what was in those hand wraps and did not have an opportunity to try that and that the revocation of his license was unfounded and I said that at the time before there was even a conversation about a Margarito fight against Manny Pacquiao. I am delighted that Antonio came through all of this and I am delighted that the Texas boxing commission read the record and saw what was in fact the true facts surrounding this situation and gave Antonio a license and I am delighted to be the promoter of this fight.”

In the news: Miguel Cotto to be present in Dallas for Pacquiao-Margarito bout

Antonio Margarito on his relationship with Top Rank…
“I am very happy where I am. I have always been treated well by Top Rank. I have done everything I have been supposed to do. I never looked to go anywhere else. Why would I go anywhere else when I am with the best? I will end up my career with them.”

Robert Garcia’s admiration…
“I have always admired Pacquiao’s career. He has done good things in boxing. He is seven-time world champion. You can’t beat that. But watching his fights over and over we know he makes mistakes.”

Antonio Margarito assessing Pacquiao…
“I couldn’t tell you anyone that comes close to his style or the way he fights. I never fought anyone like that or anyone that comes close. I see his speed. I know he is a fast guy but he is a smaller guy also. I see some things there, but I would never consider it an easy fight or think I have big advantages over him because I don’t. He may think he can be a big puncher in this weight division, so I want to get up in the ring to see what we can do with each other.”

WILDCARD WEDNESDAY: MARGARITO BETTER BE PREPARED OTHERWISE IT WILL BE A SHORT NIGHT

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
Hollywood, CA:- It was a nice day at Los Angeles today with the temperatures hovering in the 80’s. Being my day off with nothing to do except to listen and watch the elections results on TV which became boring after a while, I decided to drive to the Wildcard Gym in Hollywood to check out the scene.

I got there bright an early to check out the up and coming boxers training before the Pacman takes over the gym at a little after noon.

First on the list was the grandson of the great Flash Elorde, Juan Martin “Bai” Elorde. The 26 year old is one of the three Filipinos scheduled to fight on the undercard of the Pacquiao-Margarito tiff on November 13th at the Cowboys Stadium at Arlington, Texas.

Elorde quietly toiled in the background just doing his thing under the watchful eyes of his father Johnny Elorde. Also there to keep him company is his younger brother, Juan Miguel “Migs” Elorde who like his brother is also an undefeated boxer.

I watched Elorde do the routines, shadow boxing, skip ropes and a few rounds with the heavy bags and the speed bags. He also had four rounds doing the mitts with Coach Nathan, the trainer of Richi Mepranum.

Elorde (11-0-0,4KO) is totally focused on his fight. Being his debut in the US and under the spotlights at the cavernous Cowboys Stadium, he is determined to put together a good effort and win. “A great win will do wonders for his budding career,” his Dad informed this writer. “That is why we are totally focused on the task ahead,” he added. Elorde will be trading leathers with Angel Rodriguez (4-4-2,4KO) a Mexican-American out of Houston, Texas.

Is Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito Worth The Weight?

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
On Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboys' Stadium, Manny Pacquiao (pictured above, center) will pursue what is widely regarded as his eighth title in as many different weight classes when he faces former world champion, Antonio Margarito.

Already the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king, the 31-year-old Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) will face the 32-year-old Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) in an HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions clash for the WBC's junior middleweight (154 pounds) belt.

Their fight is being contested at catch weight of 150 pounds, meaning that neither fighter can weigh more than that, and, marking the second time that Pacquiao's contract has mandated such an agreement for a title bout. The last time, in November of 2009, the Filipino superstar dethroned Miguel Cotto for his current belt in the 12th round at a catch weight of 145.

Because of the catch weight, however, there are some in the sport who consider it deceptive to call Pacquiao-Margarito a true title fight.

"The notion of championships has already become almost meaningless in this day and age, because you have so many different weight divisions and so many different sanctioning bodies," said boxing historian Thomas Hauser. "And then, you have them being further diluted by the idea of catch weights."

Pacquiao began his career as a 106-pound, 16-year-old with a four-round decision over Edmund Enting Ignacio in January 1995, and earned his first world title with an April 1999, fourth-round knockout of Gabriel Mira at 112 pounds.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports notes that Pacquiao has won crowns in either six, or, seven divisions, depending upon how it is calculated.

Pacquiao has earned sanctioning body belts at 112, 122, 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds. At 126, Pacquiao defeated Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera, who was considered the linear champion even as he already had vacated all of his belts without having lost before facing Pacquiao.

Pacquiao has won 12 straight with eight KOs during that run, having last suffered defeat in March of 2005 against Erik Morales by unanimous decision as a super featherweight (130 pounds).

Pacquiao – Margarito make final preparations

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
LOS ANGELES—Manny Pacquiao says he is ready and 100 percent focused despite distractions outside the ring. His opponent, Antonio Margarito, meanwhile, believes he will defeat the Filipino pound-for-pound champion, something no Mexican fighter has done since Erik Morales in 2005. Pacquiao and Margarito hosted separate media day workouts earlier this week in Los Angeles as both men make final preparations for their middleweight championship showdown at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas on November 13.

Both men have a lot at stake in this fight. Pacquiao needs to prove that he can juggle being the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, while serving as a Philippine Congressman.
For Margarito, Pacquiao is his road to redemption. Margarito, who was suspended for a year after being caught loaded wraps before his bout against Sugar Shane Mosley, said defeating Paquiao would help clear his name.In Pacquiao’s training camp, distractions have become the top story. The newly elected Congressman from Sarangani has admitted that while training in Baguio City, Philippines he wasn’t 100 percent focused. His trainer Freddie Roach said it was the worst training camp since they have been together.

"Politics is taking his focus [away]," said Roach. "Manny’s mind is on politics and not sparring. Before politics he was singing and acting and that was just all fun stuff. This is something serious that he takes very seriously and he actually loves being a politician. I have competition now. It used to be just boxing but he loves politics and boxing."

"Even with the other two typhoons he never missed a day of training," added Roach. "(This training camp) he missed a day to meet the President [Benigno Aquino]. I know it’s only one day but that’s how much politics means to him now. So I have competition. I just need to get his focus right and so far, since he’s been in LA, it’s heading into the right direction."

Pacquiao said he is happy to be back in LA, and he’s regained that focus and would be ready for Margarito come November 13.

"My mind is set. I feel like I’m 100 percent conditioned and into this fight," said Pacquiao.

With the focus back, Roach and Pacquiao are preparing for a fierce and motivated opponent.

Margarito has a considerable height and natural weight advantage. Boxing pundits expect Margarito to weigh in 160 pounds during fight night, 10 pounds above the required weight limit.

Pacquiao ready to rumble vs Margarito

LOS ANGELES, CA (via Pera Padala) – With only a week before Manny Pacquiao plunges into action against Antonio Margarito, the pound-for--pound king himself and his handlers see the Filipino ring icon the winner and collect his eighth division title after their 12-round showdown Nov. 13 (Nov. 14) at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser-cum errand boy even said the fight can be held today and the reigning World Boxing Organization reigning junior-welterweight champ can come out at the better end of his 12-round scuffle with the Mexican “Tijuana Tornado.”

“That’s actually our problem today, the fight is still one week away,” he told sportswriters after Pacquiao’s four-hour workout at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood here.

Koncz actually was responding to a question as to whether there still are problems that have to be patched up before what is being hyped as the Filipinos’ toughest fight.

That, of course, is Koncz way of saying the seven-division champ is already in tip-top shape that the next nine days before the Dallas confrontation will be confined to just reviewing the fight strategy and make improvement on it.

To which, Pacquiao and chief trainer Freddie Roach agreed.

“I have never been ready like I am now,” Pacquiao blurted out during a mini-presscon attened by Filipino media men here to cover the fight. “Ready na ako. Lahat ng loopholes ay natakpan na.”

“Pati ang resistance ko ay okey na. Nag-spar ako kahapon ng 12 rounds at ni hindi man lang ako hiningal,” he added. ‘Our main strategy will be on speed. Yun naman tala and advantage ko kay Margarito. So, we will be concentrating on that in our last week of preparations.”

“Yeah, we will just be polishing on strategy, game plan in the remaining days of preparation,” Roach, for his part, said. “We had already done what we’re supposed to do. We’ll just wait for the fight day.”

Besides the usual daily limbering up, shadow-boxing and working on double end ball and speed ball, Pacquiao did 12 rounds with the mitts against Roach who looked to be enjoying everything Pacuiao did atop the ring, including exchanging barter with his ward.

“Well, you just saw him worked today. He is very happy and cheerful throughout today’s session. That only means one thing, he’s ready. That’s his way of telling Margarito that he’s ready for him,” Roach said.

“That also means all those rumors saying Manny having the worst training camp are untrue. We had several distractions in the almost two-month training brought about by politics, but Manny, like before, overcame those,” Roach said.

“in the first place, we never said we had our worst training camp. That he did not train hard. Today, after 12 rounds on the mitts today, he was asking for more rounds. But I didn’t give it to him, Roach said.

IF PACQUIAO LOSES, BLAME ME

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
A mere 10 days from now, the world will know whether Manny Pacquiao remains boxing’s pound for pound king or Antonio Margarito has pulled a colossal upset and successfully achieved the first step for his redemption.

It is well known that Manny Pacquiao, the only boxer who has won world championship belts in seven weight classes, is very superstitious. There are innumerable tales about the idiosyncrasies and rituals he goes through before each fight, lest things may not go as perfectly as well, as he wants them to be.

His superstition about drawing blood close to a fight would weaken him and his fear of the needle gave Mayweather, Jr. the justification to accuse him of being on the juice, effectively scuttling the biggest fight of the century. Although Pacquiao’s beliefs have no basis in reality and some quarters find them laughable, nonetheless I can appreciate Manny’s point.
One can write a book and enumerate the many superstitions Congressman Pacquiao believes in.

When fighting in Las Vegas, he has to stay at The Hotel in Mandalay Bay, his lucky abode while in Sin City. In spite of having the choice to be flown by a private jet or driven in a customized luxury Pacman bus from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, he always opts to ride in his “old” but lucky Navigator SUV.

Mommy Dionisia, his very religious mother, does not see his fight in person not only because she does not want to see her boy get hurt but also her presence may prove unlucky.
Nobody can make him wear any other boxing gloves but his lucky Cleto Reyes gloves. He paid dearly and lost to Morales when he used a different glove.

And we can go on and on.

Filipinos and Asians in general are very superstitious.
Since actor, singer, congressman, boxer, cologne maker, businessman Manny Pacquiao began his incredible winning streak, I have watched his fights in person from Las Vegas to Dallas.
Unfortunately, I probably will miss the November 13th Pacquiao-Margarito Fight. Just like Manny Pacquiao, I am extremely superstitious, especially with regards to sports.
Missing the fight on the 13th, an unlucky number, may trigger a cascade of superstitious nonsense.

It is not uncommon for me to blame myself for a St. Louis Cardinals loss, just because I watched the game in our bedroom rather than in the family room. I beg my youngest daughter not to watch the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. They almost always lose every time she goes to the game.

During the glory days of the St. Louis Rams, I have to follow certain rituals to ensure the team’s victory. Obviously, the past several seasons, even a miracle would not have helped the Rams. Although this year, I am back to my Rams rituals. They may have a shot going to the playoffs.

I still cannot get over the come from behind victory of the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Arizona Cardinals, just because I switched from Bud Light to Corona during that fateful last minute touchdown incredibly caught by Santonio Holmes. I hope Kurt Warner has forgiven me.

I am highly confident that with or without me watching the fight, Manny Pacquiao’s hands will be the ones raised at the end of the fight, whether by a late stoppage or a lopsided decision over the game Antonio “The Tijuana Tornado” Margarito.
However, every Pacquiao fan wants to make sure that there is nothing left to chance to ensure a victory, superstitions included.

The concerns of the fans are very palpable as they hear about the quality, or lack of it, of Team Pacquiao’s training camp.
Freddie Roach called this particular training camp, the worst ever.

Playing basketball every night, missing some of his morning road work, being down with a cold, possible foot injury, singing with his band late into the night, leaving the fresh air of Baguio a couple of times to see the President, a trip to Congress, joining a 10 K fun run in support of the clean-up of a polluted Pasig River and the list goes on…

Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza has openly voiced his disgust (with an expletive to boot in the second offering of HBO’s 24/7) about the multitude of distractions they have to overcome.
Bob Arum was seriously bothered by Pacquiao’s lack of speed and intensity, even declaring in Baguio 2 weeks ago that Margarito would have won hands down if the fight were fought at that time.
What is ironic was Bob Arum’s concern about Manny’s distractions in the Philippines but found nothing wrong about pulling his prized fighter from training in LA and fly him to Las Vegas to bolster the beleaguered campaign of his friend Senator Reid’s bid for re election in the U.S. Senate.

Congressman Pacquiao’s magic obviously worked. He can now take credit for delivering the Filipino-Americans and boxing fans votes which propelled the Senate Majority Leader to win.
I thought foreign politicians are not allowed to meddle in United States election. But what do I know?

Pundits have been divided whether the so-called distractions are for real or a mere ploy to boost Pay Per View sales and fill up the humungous Dallas Cowboy Stadium for a record breaking live attendance.

Contrast Team Pacquiao’s training camp with that of Team Margarito. All we hear are how good Margarito looks, not only physically but also during sparring.

The Tijuana Tornado has nothing to lose and has everything to gain. He obviously is the hungrier fighter. And winning this fight is the ticket to his deliverance.

While Margarito is killing himself in training to be in the best shape possible, we see Manny singing a Beatles classic “Imagine” in a duet with Will Ferrell.

While we see images of a ripped Tijuana Tornado, we hear Ariza complaining about an underweight Pacman.

Are the lack of focus, apparent lackadaisical atmosphere and the many distractions that swirl around the Team Pacquiao’s camp legitimate grounds for the fans’ anxiety?

Will superstitions play a role?

I don’t think so.

On November 13, we will find out that a hungry, focused, well trained, much bigger and 100% Antonio Margarito will not be enough to defeat a distracted, multi-tasking, underweight, inadequately trained and 75% Manny Pacquiao, the best boxer in the planet.

But in the remote likelihood that Pacquiao loses, don’t blame Manny, it’s not his fault.

Blame me and my stupid superstition.

Freddie Roach Says That Floyd Mayweather is the Only Challenge for Manny Pacquiao

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
The last time that Antonio Margarito was inside a boxing arena he was found with an illegal knuckle pad in his hand wraps before a fight with Shane Mosley. After he was found cheating, he was forced to stay away from boxing for a year and it was uncertain whether or not he would actually fight again. However, after failed attempts to get Manny Pacquiao in the ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao’s camp had to find a new opponent and fighting against Margarito is really the only thing that makes sense at this point in time. Margarito has been looking for a shot to just get back in the ring and now he’s going to step between the ropes against arguably the best pound for pound fighter in the sport. While I don’t think he’s going to be able to win this fight against Pacman, the fact that he is back in the sport after being caught cheating is a step in the right direction for Margarito.

Freddie Roach joined ESPN Radio in LA with Andrew Siciliano and Mychal Thompson to talk about the upcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, how good his training camp was, what problems Margarito presents to Pacquiao, whether or not he is concerned with Margarito when he gets wrapped, and if he expects the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight to happen.

On having a bad training camp:

“We had maybe our worst training camp ever. We’ve never had a bad one and comparative-wise it’s probably better than most people’s training camps. Manny missed one day because the President wanted to meet him and I was little pissed off about that. I told the President he can see him on his own time, not mine. We’re back on track. As soon as we got to LA, the focus was 100 percent better. We went 15 rounds yesterday with no rest period. He knows what he has to do and he assured me that I will not disappoint you. He’s on fire right now. I slept great last night because he really got his focus, there’s no politics here in America for him, and no problems at all.”

On whether or not Manny Pacquiao has lost a step:

“Not yet and I’m amazed by that. Going for his eighth world title and all these different weight classes I thought his speed may be affected by his growth also. He has power at this weight and his speed is as great as always.”

On the size of Margarito and whether or not that will be a problem:

“The reach advantage is easy to take away. It’s all about the distance and we’ve got the distance and timing of our shots down. The thing is speed is going to win this fight. Manny is going to hit him four or five punch combination and get out. Margarito is going to be swinging wide. You can beat him down the middle all night long. He’s wide with all his punches. He can’t throw a straight punch if he had to. His footwork is terrible and we will take advantage of that. I’ve studied him quite a bit. He’s a tough guy. He’s got a good chin and that’s his best asset. Overall his boxing skills, he can’t hang with my guy.”

On whether or not he will monitor Margarito when he gets wrapped:

“I’ll be right on top of it. I don’t trust anyone in this sport. They’ll be no mistakes. I will be in the dressing room the whole time he’s wrapping his hands and that won’t be a problem.”

Whether or not the Mayweather fight will happen:

“I hope so because that is the biggest challenge in the world for us. Mayweather, he’s a little crazy and all that, but he can fight. He’s a good boxer and I just hope that fight happens because that’s the only challenge out there. I feel if he doesn’t come to the table that we might have no options and Manny might just go to Politics and get out of boxing because Maywehather won’t fight him. He’s the only real challenge out there that I can see at this point. I hope that fight happens as bad as you do. A lot of people want to see us kick his ass too and we will do that.”

Pacquiao - Margarito fight coverage in DFW needs to start now!

Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming
For certain the attention the Dallas - Fort Worth television market (5th largest in the nation) has been able to focus on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight November 13 has been affected by two unexpected actions. And neither helped the fight sell tickets.

First, the next door Texas Rangers were in a pennant race all summer and just concluded its season in the World Series Monday night.

Second, the dismal start to the season (1-6) for a Cowboys team expected to contend for the playoffs if not the Super Bowl has caused much concern among the media as to possible coaching firings or player transactions as the Cowboys and promoter Jerry Jones try to right the ship.

Valuable air-time for early fight coverage has been lost as both the Rangers and Cowboys have dominated the local airwaves albeit for different reasons.

A weak under card was just made weaker as Kelly Pavlik dropped off the card a few days ago citing an injury. The under card is supposed to help sell tickets, not be a nuisance to it.

Still the main event could save the day and carry the entire show and it seems it will have to.

Early ticket sales on the floor have been reported brisk as was the Pacquiao fight against Joshua Clottey back in March also at Cowboys Stadium.

The Rangers seem primed with its young team to be a contender for years to come and the Cowboys might be heading in the polar opposite direction which means media coverage in the next two weeks could give us a clue what future coverage will be like in coming years if Jerry Jones wants to host big time professional boxing.

Pacman breaks sparring mate’s nose, says he’s ready for battle

LOS ANGELES, CA (via Pera Padala)) – A week after breaking the nose of his sparring partner, Manny Pacquiao declared himself ready to mix it up with Antonio Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight championship.

“I’m ready,” Pacquiao firmly said after sparring for nine rounds with regular sparring mates Rashad Halloway, David Rodela and Rey Beltran Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the Wild Card Gym here.

“I’m almost there and if the fight is gonna be held this weekend, I’ll be 100 percent okay,” he said while signing autographs for his adoring fans inside his favorite Thai Food Restaurant just in front of the Freddie Roach-owned sweat shop in downtown Hollywood.

“Ayos na ako. Pakisabi lang sa ating mga kababayan na huwag silang mag-alaala sa mga balitang half-hearted ang ensayo ko.Gaya ng dati, hindi ko sila bibiguin. Muli ay iniaalay ko sa kanila ang labang ito,” he said by way of allaying fears that he’s been too complacent in his training.

Roach himself agreed, saying that after the seven-division champion forced a sparring partner he refused to name to pack up after his nose was dislocated Tuesday last week, he knew right then that there’s no longer reason to worry about in regards to the boxer’s condition.

“Manny broke his nose so he’s out,” he said in justifying his decision to let the sparring partner go. “I pity him, actually I know him having been recommended by one of my boys here. I don’t want to mention his name because I don’t want to hurt the feeling of the guy.”

“His performance in sparring only means, he’s ready to fight to win. Manny will knock him (Margarito) out,” Roach assured.

Roach said the guy, a black American had been in the team only lately and he felt bad letting him pack up,” but that’s one of the risks one must face in this business.”

Pacquiao had actually completed the target 120 rounds of sparring that started in Baguio City in the second week of his one-month preparation in the country, but still he scheduled nine more rounds – five on Thursday and four on Monday before flying to Arlington, Texas site of the big battle against the “Tijuana “Tornado” Nov. 13 at the luxurious Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

“We’re already in the tapering off stage of preparations with only 10 days left before the fight. Manny will knock him (Margarito) out,” he assured.

Roach admitted once more he was a little bit worried upon arriving here from Baguio Sunday last week, what with the many distractions roaming around, quickly adding though that he never was in doubt as to Filipino icon’s capability to recover for lost time with his knack to embroil himself to many kind of disturbances, especially now that he’s a congressman.

“But as in our previous fights, here he is again erasing the cloud of doubts hovering his head the past several weeks,” he said. “Like what he told you, I myself is assuring everybody that he has never been so focused in training.”

“Like his promise to his countrymen, he also told me not to worry because he will not fail me. And that, of course, made me happy. I can now sleep well starting tonight,” he said

Team Margarito continues preparation, Garcia talks aftermath of Cotto victory

In less than a week’s time Antonio Margarito and his team will find themselves in Dallas, Texas for their November 13th bout with Manny Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium. Despite being a heavy underdog and having dealt with the aftermath of his January 2009 hand wrap scandal, Margarito is extremely focused heading into the bout and the overall vibe in his camp has been very care free.

Earlier today Margarito and his trainer Robert Garcia continued their training for the contest at the coach’s personal facility in Oxnard, California. Garcia insists that the core of the hard work has been complete and by the time they arrive in Texas they will be focusing solely on cutting down Margarito’s weight.

<--- Slideshow: Latest images from Camp Margarito

“I’ve been maintaining him right at 158, 156,” Garcia said last week during Margarito’s open media workout in Los Angeles. “Sometimes he gets back up to 159, 160 and around there. The last week or so is when we will cut down.”

Those numbers were fairly peculiar, as Garcia advised me well over a month ago that Margarito was hovering around 159 pounds, but the former world champion obviously feels he has a handle on the situation. On this day Margarito could be seen sporting a sweat suit, which typically is associated with a fighter trying to cut serious pounds, but when looking at Margarito’s physique he certainly didn’t appear weight drained during his workout for the press on Thursday.

When thinking of Margarito’s chances in this bout many people are turning to his July 2008 TKO over Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In that fight Margarito took over the contest with sheer pressure and nonstop activity, dropping the brave Boricua in twice late in the fight before registering an 11th round stoppage. It was an excellent showcase of breaking an opponent’s will but Garcia feels that benchmark performance was also hindering to Margarito’s career.

“After the Cotto fight he was on top of the world,” Garcia said. “Everywhere he traveled he just had a good time. He was just loving life at that point and he spent too much time out of the gym. When he came back to get ready for the [Mosley] fight, six weeks before the fight he was close to forty pounds overweight. That in itself, to lose forty pounds in six weeks, is not only a bad move but dangerous. He had to lose all that weight and going into that fight he had nothing.”

Pacquiao Watch: Weighty issues

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Manny Pacquiao’s conditioning coach Alex Ariza is worried his ward may be too small against Antonio Margarito, whom the Filipino will fight November 13 (November 14 Philippine time) at a catch weight of 151 pounds.

Ariza wants Pacquiao to bulk up and tip the scale between 146 to 148 pounds during the weigh in. To achieve that objective, he devised a regimen that will allow Manny to bulk up but still maintain his speed, or at least still fast enough against Margarito.

Pacquiao’s walking weight is said to be between 150 to 155 pounds, when not in training. Bulking him a little bit should not be a problem for Pacquiao.

Across the other training camp, little has been said about Antonio Margarito’s current and actual weight. He is at home fighting at the regulation weight of 147 – that was before he was suspended for trying to load up his hand wraps prior to his fight with Shane Mosley.

When the two were presented to the press in August, the disparity in the heft and height between them was so pronounced most of the photos released were head shots. Margarito however was at least 170 pounds, or more than 20 pounds over the contracted weight limit. Nobody dared or even bothered report his actual weight during the press conference.

Between two gladiators fighting at a catch weight, I’d take an undersized welterweight moving up five pounds than a bloated one trying to shed off 20 pounds. Especially if the smaller guy happens to go by the name of Manny Pacquiao.

Prominent boxing writer Michael Marley, with whom I shared more than a couple of beers while he was in General Santos, swore Margarito was pale and looked decimated at training camp, obviously trimming down in weight.

Manny should have sparred at least 100 rounds by now but nobody is volunteering information about it.

If all the reports on Margarito and Pacquiao are true, I will still go for Pacquiao if stamina and endurance are key factors to the fight.

My take is that it should hold true unless Margarito is able to sneak in a violent punch to end Manny’s night - either by a severe cut or a knockout.

The last time Manny was disadvantaged due to a cut was against Morales and that was more than five years ago. Manny lost that one via a unanimous decision. And the last time Manny was stopped? It was in 1999 as a lanky flyweight struggling to put his weight in check. In fact, he lost his title in that one at the scales, even before he climbed the ring.

Pacquiao vs. Margarito quick fight notes

DALLAS, TX - Word yesterday from promoter Top Rank that Kelly Pavlik is off the November 13 Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito card at Cowboys Stadium. Top Rank says a rib injury while ESPN's boxing reporter Dan Rafael is wondering if it's not due to an alcohol problem.

Pavlik was to face Brian Vera and that fight is now totally scrapped in favor of a fight featuring young star Brandon Rios vs. TBA.

While both Pacquiao and Margarito may weigh the same amount for a few moments at the weigh-in November 12, you have to wonder about Margarito at times weighing over 20 pounds more for fights and being almost six inches taller than Pacquiao as they both get to the fight at Cowboys Stadium.

You have to believe Margarito will put up a much better fight against Pacquiao than Joshua Clottey did. Clottey fought a defensive fight for 12 rounds and did just enough to survive.

Never one to miss an opportunity, promoter Jerry Jones had a salesperson selling discounted fight tickets at the Maple Avenue Boxing Gym last Saturday when HBO analyst Emanuel Steward was giving a clinic to a packed house of Dallas-Fort Worth boxing officials.

Like the Pacquiao - Clottey fight, the host hotel for the fight is the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine.

Pacquiao-Margarito 24/7: Episode 2: Two Portraits of Commitment

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
To get an idea of the frustration in the Manny Pacquiao training camp one would only have to watch the digression of Pacquiao strength and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza in the second installment of 24/7.

Three key moments in the installment color the distractions in the Pacquiao camp, which trainer Freddie Roach has called, “Probably our worst training camp ever.”

Near the beginning of the episode Ariza is surprised by the evidently spur-of-the-moment wedding and reception of Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz which threw off the momentum of the camp.

“I thought it was a joke,” Ariza said, trying poorly to cover up his irritation. “I didn’t know anything about it, you can’t keep a secret in this camp.”

That Koncz was the impetus for this break in camp was no doubt even less humorous to Ariza. Koncz’s previous training camp distractions at one time led to Ariza and Koncz trading blows.

The second moment in the Pacquiao camp that highlighted an break in the normal flow of a Pacquiao training camp was WBA light welterweight champion Amir Kahn brought in to bring Pacquiao’s speed up to acceptable levels.

In a montage of two sparring sessions Khan is continually beating Pacquiao to the punch and commanding the ring. Pacquiao is seen backed up and rocked by a few of Khan’s blows.

In between the sparring sessions the Pacquiao camp is moved from Baguio City, Philippines to Hollywood, California, and an interview with Ariza shows a man nonplussed by what he sees.

“Baguio reminded me of the Rocky movie where Sylvester Stallone is training in a hotel, media was all around and cameras and he was fighting Clubber Lang and went in there and got destroyed,” Ariza said.

The comparison to Rocky III is a fair one, the Pacquiao of 24/7 seems more concerned about what needs to be done outside the ring than in it and his distractions are a red flag to everyone but him.

In Rocky III when Rocky Balboa loses track of his ring life in favor of his fame and other obligations, Trainer Mickey Goldmill puts it into perspective for him.

“The worst thing that happened to you, that can happen to any fighter, you got civilized,” Goldmill tells Balboa.

But the world of Rocky Balboa is one of fiction and the world of Manny Pacquiao is very real and it will not be the stage hands of Mr. T stalking Pacquiao around the ring on November 13.

Close to the end of the episode Pacquiao again cuts camp in California to travel to Las Vegas on a political obligation. The Ariza at the beginning of the episode laughing the small distractions off is gone, with only 14 days till fight night, it is now a serious situation.

“He (Pacquiao) says to me it’s a quick trip,” Ariza said. “Fuck! a quick trip has been this whole camp.”

A week ago I derided the first episode of 24/7 as being a snooze fest or a wasted-air infomercial trying to sell a product that just is not there.

A good fight needs a good promoter, one that can find the duality in a fight and highlight those tangible and intangible aspects to build the hype.

HBO is a great promoter and they have found a rhythm in the second installment by focusing on the breaks in rhythm in the Pacquiao camp.

The dichotomy in this fight is broken between a man who might be losing his will to fight and a man has fighting as his only means to prove himself.

In this episode we were also treated with a focused Antonio Margarito, a driven trainer in Robert Garcia and what looks to be a hell of a test for Manny Pacquiao in two weeks.

“I want Freddie to give me my respect,” Garcia said.

“When your fame transcends punches, knockouts and title belts,” Liev Schreiber said in his voice over. “Things get more complicated.”

Antonio Margarito Is Bad For Business, Bad For Boxing Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/antonio-margarito-is-bad-for-business-bad-for-boxing-

As a longtime fan and sponsor of boxing and a close, personal friend to Miguel Cotto, it is my opinion that Antonio Margarito is the worst thing for boxing.

My love of boxing makes me hate anything that threatens its integrity. Margarito was caught wrapping his gloves with plaster of Paris the night that he lost the WBA Welterweight title to “Sugar” Shane Mosley.* His conduct inevitably leads to a questioning of the legitimacy of his victory over Miguel Cotto in his previous bout.

[Ed. note: Maragrito and his trainer were suspended from boxing for one year after the incident at the Mosely fight.]

It is unlikely that fans will ever know the exact point in time when Margarito became a cheater, but the undeniable fact remains that Margarito has sacrificed his honor as a boxer.

The upcoming fight between Margarito and Manny Pacquiao (for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight title) creates a no-win scenario for boxing. If Margarito loses, then fans have additional evidence that his career was built on dishonesty and cheating. And if he wins, we will call a cheater a champion. Should boxing fans admire someone who used cement to attain a level of pain and destruction that can’t compare with human flesh and muscles?

Athletes are supposed to be honorable, and represent themselves and their people with pride. Mexico has a long and storied history in boxing. Julio Cesar Chavez is a six-time world champion in three weight divisions. For several years he was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and is arguably the greatest fighter to represent his country and heritage.

Ricardo Lopez is the rare breed to have retired undefeated (51-0-1) after defending the WBC Strawweight championship a record 21 times and tying Joe Louis' record for consecutive title bouts without a loss (26).

"The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya is of Mexican descent and a gold medalist at the Barcelona Olympic Games who in his pro career defeated 17 world champions and won 10 world titles in six different weight classes.

Rich with great champions and tradition, Mexican boxers have proudly and honorably represented themselves in the sport for many years and will continue to do so. Margarito should not be allowed to tarnish a tradition that Mexican boxers have spent decades establishing.

Antonio Margarito has been anything but honorable, and as a sponsor I refuse to represent anyone who has exhibited that kind of behavior. Any company that sponsors Margarito needs to seriously reconsider what they represent as a brand. To sponsor Margarito is not to sponsor boxing. It is a decision to pay an athlete who has risked doing irreparable physical harm to fellow fighters.

Two men enter a ring to challenge each other’s strength and athleticism. There is honor in that. When I look for boxers and mixed martial artists to sign sponsorship deals with Ecko, I seek out fighters who display the pride and honor of a warrior. I look for fighters that will strive toward victory with an honest, powerful message, a message that I don't believe carries over to a guy like Antonio Margarito.

Eric Samson is a marketing consultant in action sports, who specializes in building brands through social media and strategic partnerships. He has been responsible for Ecko Unltd's Sports Marketing initiatives since 2006 and was a sponsor of Miguel Cotto's on the night he fought Antonio Margarito.

$100k gamble: The story of the first Pacquiao After-Fight party

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
“Your crazy! Oscar’s over 5 inches taller. He fought and won at middleweight! That’s 160 pounds! Pacquaio’s never fought over 135 pounds. Why on earth would you organize an after-fight party for Pacquiao? Manny may not even show up. He might end up in the hospital after the fight. Say goodbye to your $100k investment Dan! That was Dan Soliven’s younger brother screaming at him over the phone from Manila.

Hit hard by the subprime mortgage crisis and down on his luck, Dan Soliven was getting desperate. He had lost tens of thousands of dollars from his high-risk real-estate deals that once upon a time made him hundreds of thousands of dollars. “My net worth was a shade under $1 million dollars just one year before the Pacquiao vs De la Hoya fight. I could have gone back to Cebu or Manila and retired comfortably. But I continued to take huge risks that exploded in my face.”

Little did he know that a chance encounter with a member of Team Pacquiao in Los Angeles would change his fortunes 180 degrees. Eating alone at a Chinese restaurant, a man with a “Team Pacquiao” jacket came in to wait for take-away food. Dan approached the total stranger and asked if he was really a member of Pacquiao’s team and if he could set up a meeting with Manny. He gave his business card and left the restaurant not expecting a reply at all. Dan figured, the guy could have just bought his “Team Pacquiao” jacket at a Nike store a few blocks away.

2 hours later, Dan was surprised to get a phone call from him. He asked if he wanted to meet Pacquiao at his condominium at Palazzo Beverly Hills that same afternoon. He was elated but really did not believe that it was that easy to ask for a meeting with the most popular citizen of the Philippines and the best boxer in the world. Dan immediately drove to Manny’s unit a few hours later still skeptical if the guy he met was actually a team member. Dan knocks on the door and is relieved to be let in and see around 25 people in a condominium unit designed for 8. “Now this is definitely Manny’s place”. Dan laughing inside.

He’s introduced to Manny and they shake hands- “Pasok ka. Dun ka muna” (come in and stay there for awhile). Manny continued to play darts for over 2 hours while Dan waited at the balcony. That’s where he met “Pacman”, Manny’s world famous Jack Russel Terrier, Mike Koncz, Buboy Fernandez, and other members of team Pacquiao. After 2 hours, Dan was getting impatient and thought this whole idea is crazy. So he told Mike Koncz that he’ll just leave and will just thank Pacquiao and the rest of the team for letting a total stranger in his home. “He’s playing darts man. Wait a few more minutes. He’ll come out and sit down with you,” Mike Koncz tells Dan. After another 30 minutes, Manny comes out and sits down with Dan. “Oh, gusto mo daw ako ma meet” (So, you wanted to meet me?)- Manny asked Dan.

This is the way the meeting went:

Dan: “Thank you for your time Manny. I’ll make this short. I want to organize an “After – Fight party for you after your bout with Oscar.”

Pacquiao: “Kaya mo ba e fund yung ganyang event? Madami kami dito” (can you fund such an event? Look at my staff, we’re a lot here).

Dan: “Magkano ba Manny”? (how much Manny?)

Pacquaio: “$100,000. Hindi naman sa akin yan. Para sa boys yan. Bibigay ko lang sa kanila yan para Masaya lahat”. ($100k. That’s not for me. I’ll just give that to the boys. As you can see, we’re so many here. I like making them happy).

Dan: “Mejo malaki yan Manny pero sige. Bigyan mo akong 20 minutes. Mag tatawag ako. Hindi kaya ito mag isa kasi eh. Nalugi ako sa real-estate dito Manny. (That’s big. But ok. Let me make a few phone calls. I cannot put that up myself. I got hit by the real-estate crisis and will need help from family and friends).

Pacquiao: “Naiintindihan ko. Sige lang. Tulungan tayo” ( I understand. Ok. Don’t worry. Let’s help each other.)

After calling a few friends in the Philippines with his mobile phone from Pacquiao’s flat, Dan tells Manny- “I’m in. I’ll pay you $100k up front. Let me have the exclusive rights to the “Pacquiao vs De la Hoya after fight party.” Dan later recalls that saying that to Manny sent shivers down his spine. “This is not an exaggeration, that was 4 weeks before the fight. I slept an average of 3 hours a day after meeting Manny. I was worried that I was digging myself in another hole.”

Pacquiao shakes Dan’s hand and tells him to come back with the cash the next day or 2 and write down what he wants him to do for the after-fight party. “I borrowed money from friends and family members and withdrew $100,000 cash. Immediately the next day. I drove to Manny’s flat with the cash, contract and a video camera on hand.”

This was all haphazardly done! I reserved the Rum Jungle bar and restaurant at the Mandalay Bay Hotel 3 days after the meeting and pre sold tickets to the event at $60. Tickets were sold out after 8 days but I was still short of the break-even point since I was relying on “walk-in” customers to profit. I set the price at $100 per ticket for the walk-in customers. I was relying on the “walk-ins” to really make money. But then I heard this from 9 out of 10 so called “boxing experts.”

“Big mistake Dan. When a boxer is injured after the fight, he’ll have to go straight to the hospital for observation. There is a huge possibility Manny may not even be there. And when Manny’s not at that party, no one will show up except the people that already paid for their tickets”. But at that point, there was no turning back. “The contract has been signed, sealed and delivered. I’ll just leave it up to fate.”

“Part of my deal with Manny was a ringside ticket to that fight. I had heart pulpitations for the first 3 rounds. I couldn’t take it being so close to the action. But after the 3rd round, I knew my gamble was going to pay off big time. After Pacquiao annihilated Oscar in the 8th round and stood up before the start of the 9th to concede to Manny, I did not celebrate. I was literally pinned to my seat. I was completely exhausted. It was surreal. The entire Philippines and the Mandalay Bay was celebrating and here I was drained and pinned to my seat & teary-eyed for 10 minutes.

“I went back to my hotel room in Mandalay Bay, said a prayer and thanked God things turned out okay. I took a short nap and partied with the rest of the Philippines at the Rum Jungle. That was probably one of the happiest days of my life. I will forever be grateful to Manny for giving a guy down on his luck a chance to get back on his feet.”

I haven’t heard of an after-fight party or concert after November 13, 2010. There is news of turmoil in Manny’s camp. Coach Roach is irritated that Manny’s training is often interrupted by phone calls and meetings with the president of the Philippines. But this is the same story told every time Manny fights. Things always turn out in his favor. Margarito is hungrier. He has everything to gain and nothing to lose on November 13. The odds are slowly inching toward an even fight. Let’s wait and see.

Pacquiao’s weight ‘too low’–Ariza

MANILA—Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao looked “very good” in sparring at the Wild Card Gym but his weight was a cause of concern for strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, the Inquirer learned Sunday.

With 13 days remaining before Pacquiao’s showdown with Antonio Margarito at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas, Ariza said the Filipino champ’s reported weight of 146 lb “is too low.”

At that weight, Ariza said Pacquiao was 10 pounds lighter than Margarito, who is expected to come in at 165 on fight night with the Pacman climbing the ring at 150.

The showdown for the WBC super welterweight title will be held at a catch weight of 151 lb.

Ariza noted that Pacquiao was impressive against his three sparring partners because “they are more competitive and move well and fight at a faster pace” which suits Pacquiao whose forte is his speed.

However, the question of the size and punching power of his sparring partners, Richard Holloway, David Rodela and Raymund Beltran compared to the 5-foot-11 power-punching Antonio Margarito surfaced.

Ariza had to abandon the conditioning program designed to build Pacquiao physically to take on the bigger and taller Margarito after Filipino trainer Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez and another assistant Nonoy Neri noted that Pacquiao had become sluggish and the extra poundage slowed him down.

Ariza said that despite efforts to change Pacquiao’s preparation he would “not worry about that and support him all the way.”

“It’s too late. We can’t change anything in the next ten days,” he added.

Meanwhile, trainer Freddie Roach has yet to tap undefeated light middleweight Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs) as well as rising middleweight star Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (21-0, 15 K’s) to spar with Pacquiao.

Sources said the celebrated trainer may not wish to risk anything at this stage against opponents who could conceivably hurt Pacquiao with their speed and power.

Margarito camp does not want to hear excuses

Pacquiao Margarito 24/7, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
On November 14th team Margarito does not want to hear any excuses from anyone as to why their guy defeated Manny Pacquiao. Trainer Roberto Garcia recently spoke about wanting a top conditioned ready to go Manny Pacquiao. Garcia doesn't want to hear anything from the other side, no excuses, no explanations, nothing, he wants to bathe in the success of his fighter, Antonio Margarito knowing that his guy won fair and square.

Margarito and his team are very confident. Garcia recently talked about this fight and how it's looking easier the more he looks at Pacquiao film. The confidence is growing, and their camp has gone well. Tony Margarito is convinced that he will win, and so is his team. They feel as if Manny is just too small and will not be able to inflict as much damage on their guy as he has other opponents.

Last week 8countNews was invited to Oxnard, and got a first hand look at how the former 3 time world champion was doing. What I saw was an extremely focused fighter inside of the ring, and a very relaxed fighter outside of the ring. The energy in the gym was high, and so was the confidence. Nobody in that gym believes that Manny Pacquiao will win this fight.

Margarito is not stupid though. He knows that on November 13th, he will have his hands full. Margarito knows that he will have to figure out a way to deal with the blinding speed of Manny Pacquiao. He knows that he will have to figure out a way to avoid the punishment that Pacquiao had inflicted on his previous opponents. This is no small task, so Tony knows that he will have to put forth the greatest effort of his entire career.

Most of the folks that I spoke with in Oxnard feel as if Manny bit off more than he can chew by coming up to this weight class. Margarito has a huge size and reach advantage, and he has a chin like a brick. Margarito recently spoke about the differences in him and other Pacquiao opponents, " I am not Joshua Clottey, I will keep moving in and I will be throwing a lot of punches." What Margarito said is right, he is nothing like a Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao will have to deal with a big strong opponent that does like to move forward, and who does like to throw a plethora of punches.

Focus, pride, determination, something to prove, money, all at stake on November 13th. Margarito knows that he will never completely put to bed the hand-wrap situation, but a win over Manny Pacquiao will certainly make dealing with it easier. Not to mention adding a few zero's to his next paycheck.

This fight has the makings of fireworks early, but time will tell for how long.
