Manny Pacquiao prefers Mexico over Vegas for tax $aving$

Fighting Antonio Margarito South of the Border, down Mexico way, is something that Manny Pacquiao would welcome for more than one reason.

Yes, Pacquiao was greeted and treated warmly on a recent short holiday stay in Margarito's homeland and discovered that he many fans there.

And, yes, Pacman feels it would be appropriate for him to perform in Mexico to show his fans some love.

But, according to his agent Michael Koncz, the overiding concern for Pacquiao would be the financial benefit he would get by fighting in Monterey rather than in Las Vegas.

Koncz, who is still in Las Vegas huddling with promoter Bob Arum but flies back to Manila to meet with his boss on Aug. 1, said there is a favorable tax situation with the Mexican site.

“Manny loves the people at the MGM Grand and they've treated him well but it becomes an economic decision,” Koncz said Wednesday. “There's a 35 percent tax burder for Manny to shoulder in America but not in Mexico and that adds up.”

So, if the Nevada boxing board does see fit to license Margarito after their Aug. 9 meeting, Team Pacquiao has no problem taking the bout to Monterey on Nov. 13.

“Manny knows he will get a warm reception from the people in Mexico. They will cheer, some of them will, for Margarito but he feels some will cheer him as well. The Mexican boxing fans are very intelligent and they are not racists of any sort.

Mr. Smith went to Washington and Mr. Pacquiao has gone to Manila to represent the people of Sarangani (Facebook)

“The Mexicans fans know Manny as an exciting fighter and, thus, they warmly embrace him. Manny does appreciate that.”

Koncz said Pacman has accepted the fact that Floyd Mayweather has demurred, at least until 2011. He doesn't like it but he accepts the reality.

“Manny is disappointed and he is sad because he wanted to give the fans the show, the big fight they are calling for all around the world. But it's just not to be.”

Koncz said he did not even discuss the huge height and reach and strength advantages Margarito has over the smaller Pacquiao.

The Canadian said he learned his lesson on on size difference in the Oscar de la Hoya bout.

“Manny feels comfortable in fighting Margarito like he was comfortable in taking on the very tall Oscar,” Koncz said. “So I did not even bring that up.”

Koncz said he believes Pacquiao is not at his career peak and will keep improving fight by fight.

“I see it every time out,” Koncz said. “I think the peak for Manny comes in the next two to three years. I do not think he has peaked yet. He is continuing to get better.”

Noting how smoothly Pacquiao has settled into his Congressional role, Koncz said Manny has told him he hopes to set an example for colleagues and for his country as a whole.

“Manny is finding it so enjoyable because he had a lifelong dream to be a public servant and now he is in there doing it. It's not a gimmick for him. He wants to show the public that you can achieve political change as he did in beating the interests who ruled Sarangani for 30 some years and that change is good. He wants to be an example of how politics and politicians can be good.”

When he lands in the Philippines, Koncz said he would bring complete bout offers for Nov. 13 for Pacman to fight either Margarito or have a rematch with Miguel Cotto.

Koncz said Pacquiao was happy to hear HBO Sports leader Ross Greenburg's public statement about how the TV executive tried in vain to make the Floyd-Manny Super Bout.

“Manny was very glad to hear that because it explains the situation to the public, to the fans. It's not a matter of Greenburg taking sides. What made his statement important is that it set the record straight.”

Pacquiao needs Margarito, catch weight, fight in Mexico like an obese person needs Twinkies

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Yes, Manny Pacquiao can probably go ahead and do it anyway, but he doesn't really need it.

Like Twinkies to an obese person with a failing heart, Pacquiao has no need to fight Margarito in Mexico furthermore at a catch weight.

GREED and GLUTTONY are silent killers. We all know what Bob Arum is trying to feed us to fatten his pockets and cash cow, but you never know, this Twinky might very well be the one that gives the obese kid a stroke.

In fact, I'm calling this match-up "The Twinky Fight". Margarito is a Twinky that can only offer temporary satisfaction. There's not a lot of substance in it. Thing is, he isn't a sure win either for Pacquiao, and if Pac does indeed beat him, he would've only beaten a guy who was caught cheating and was destroyed by Shane Mosley who was shut out by Floyd Mayweather Jr. A win against Margarito does no good for his legacy and perhaps even puts it into question.

Yes, he defeated his other opponents fair and square and the catch weight demand against Cotto was okay, but to grab another belt against a disgraced opponent and ask him to go down to 150? I would tend to start agreeing with those who would question the legitimacy of Pacquiao's achievements if he does indeed push through with this one. It will tarnish his previous accomplishments to an extent. And if he loses? It's going to be like Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall. It would be catastrophic. And for what? Why would you risk everything you've worked so hard for, for a Twinky? Pacquiao will be fighting for practically NOTHING. Oh, money of course.

I get that catch weights have been done in the UFC and other instances in boxing too, but this is not the UFC and this is not that point in time whoever wants to compare it with. This is Manny Pacquiao who is down to his last fight or two. This is the fighter of the decade who is simply putting the final touches to his legendary career. Would you want to leave on a sour, bitter or salty note? I may be wrong but I say NO. Pacquiao's legacy has been about being a man for the people and fighting the best.

Margarito is not the best.

He used to be cool until he got caught cheating and he has done nothing of significance yet for him to even be note worthy. Let him earn his way back, don't reward him with the biggest fight of his life.

Everyone knows this is about one thing. MONEY. And when you say MONEY, you don't think Pacquiao, you think Mayweather. So why would Pacquiao want to start now? He can make a ton of money against anybody anyway. And if you ask me, he can take this Twinky, but I sure won't. Am I going to watch the fight? Sure! It's Pacquiao, what boxing fan does not want to watch him fight? All I'm saying is that there are other better options out there and I just wish Pacquiao exercised them.

Side Note:

No offense to all the fat people like my friend Minny Buboy, but if you really hate being that big, go work out and stop eating. Quit whining. Other than that, just accept that you are fat and be happy with your lives. Yes I said it. Being fat is just a state of mind. Love what you got, just mind the health risks.

Antonio Margarito applies to California for reinstated boxing license

Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Disciplined boxer Antonio Margarito on Wednesday filed an application to have his license to fight reinstated by the California State Athletic Commission, more than 17 months since it was revoked when officials confiscated "loaded" hand wraps from the Tijuana fighter before his failed world welterweight title defense at Staples Center in January 2009.

Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum, told The Times, "We've asked for this to be heard on an expedited basis," before the commission's next scheduled meeting Sept. 20 in Los Angeles.

Margarito has agreed to fight Manny Pacquiao Nov. 13 at a site yet to be determined. Arum doesn't want Margarito to fight Pacquiaio in California, but when the promoter sought to have Margarito re-licensed in Nevada earlier this month, commissioners there ruled to table their decision until Margarito first attempted to have his appeal heard where the license was originally stripped.

A Pacquiao-Margarito bout would challenge the May Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley bout to emerge as the most lucrative fight of the year, and Arum said he feels obligated to give his home state Nevada a shot at landing the bout.

However, the promoter said Wednesday that "a half dozen states have said they will grant us a license without a decision by California," not including Nevada. The favorites among other U.S. destinations are believed to be Texas, where Pacquiao drew a crowd of 51,000 for a March bout against lesser-known Joshua Clottey, and Atlantic City, N.J., which would cater to the big gamblers who've descended upon Las Vegas in Pacquiao's prior fights there.

Margarito, who returned to fighting in May in a bout in Mexico, has since fired his suspended trainer, Javier Capetillo, who claimed at the February 2009 California commission meeting that plaster-coated pads ended up inside Margarito's hand wraps accidentally, and that the former two-time world welterweight champion had no knowledge of wrongdoing.

Exec: Pacquiao-Mayweather talks true

By Dan Rafael

As pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao moves on to a probable Nov. 13 fight against Antonio Margarito -- now that Floyd Mayweather has said he is not interested in making boxing's biggest fight, at least this year -- there is still some unfinished business from the messiness of last week's cliffhanger: Were the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps negotiating the fight or not?

Top Rank's Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, insists they were, using HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg as an intermediary.

The Mayweather camp said that is not true and that there were never any negotiations.

The man in the middle of the storm, Greenburg, remained silent even when pressed repeatedly to offer his version of events.

On Monday night, Greenburg finally did.

He took the Arum/Pacquiao side.

"Fights like Mayweather vs. Pacquiao are significant because of these fighters' ability to connect with sports fans around the world. It's unfortunate that it won't happen in 2010," Greenburg said in a statement. "I had been negotiating with a representative from each side since May 2nd, carefully trying to put the fight together. Hopefully, someday this fight will happen. Sports fans deserve it."

The date Greenburg mentioned was the day after Mayweather's resounding decision win against Shane Mosley.

Arum had said over and over during the past two weeks, beginning on a 3 a.m. ET July 17 conference call to announce that the exclusive window to negotiate with Mayweather had closed, that he was negotiating the fight with Al Haymon, Mayweather's adviser, with Greenburg as the go-between.

Arum said he would discuss deal points with Greenburg, who would then take them to Haymon and vice versa.

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's other adviser and the public voice because Haymon refuses to speak to the press, said a few days after Arum outlined how the talks went that there had never been any negotiations.

He released a statement a few days after Arum's teleconference that said, "Here are the facts. Al Haymon, (Golden Boy Promotions CEO) Richard Schaefer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis, and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place, nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13. Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth, but history tells us who is lying."

Ellerbe was clearly taking a shot at Arum, whose history of playing fast and loose with the truth is legendary in boxing circles.

Schaefer, who has promoted Mayweather's past several fights, also denied the negotiations and said he stood behind Ellerbe's statement.

Arum was pleased that Greenburg supported his version of events and cut him slack for taking a week to say so publicly.

"He works for a major public company and he has to clear this sort of thing with his bosses," Arum told ESPN.com. "I understand that he had to get his statement cleared."

Arum was not so kind to Schaefer.

"The one you should all be taking to task is Schaefer for lying to the press," Arum said. "You don't do that. You can say 'no comment' or say nothing. Richard Schaefer owes an apology to the press, not to me, because I've written him off a long time ago. But now anything he says will be suspect. I don't feel vindicated by Ross' statement because that's what happened. I knew what happened because I know I lived through the negotiations. I knew what I said about them was absolutely truthful so I didn't give a damn who believed me. No skin off my back.

"Indeed, when I made the statement about the negotiations on the conference call, I wasn't looking for controversy. I was kind to Mayweather. But Mayweather is the boss on his side and when he says, 'jump,' you're supposed to ask, 'how high.' That's why none of them have any credibility. Schaefer and Haymon and Ellerbe, they cling to the Mayweather boat because that's the source of their riches. So the fact is that Ellerbe, who is not a bad guy, will do anything that Floyd asks, but Floyd is not quite a rational person. For Schaefer to be part of this drinking the Kool Aid is really pathetic. It's really sad. Doesn't he have any pride?"

Ellerbe was surprised to hear what Greenburg said, but told ESPN.com, "I stand behind my statement 100 percent. Obviously, the term negotiation needs to be defined to those parties who are making these comments. Calling to inquire about what Floyd is thinking about doing is not a negotiation. There was never any negotiation. I respect Ross but I am 100 percent sure there were no negotiations."

Schaefer, in Las Vegas promoting Saturday night's Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz lightweight championship fight on HBO PPV, once again backed Ellerbe.

"I think it's unfortunate that Ross made that statement," Schaefer told ESPN.com. "I fully stand behind the statement I made. I have not negotiated with Ross and I am not aware of any negotiations that have taken place.

"If Ross or Arum wants to go through a lie detector test, we can arrange that. I can only tell you I have regular contact with Al and Leonard and there were no negotiations going on. I don't know exactly what Ross is referring to or what he is talking about. But I have been very consistent. There were none going on. Arum should just get a life and stop attacking me on a nonstop basis. This is really childish."

Arum is now focused on finalizing the Pacquiao-Margarito fight, which if completed, will take place at a maximum weight of 150 pounds for the WBC's vacant junior middleweight title. If Pacquiao wins, he would extend his record of winning world titles to an eighth weight class. Pacquiao has won titles from flyweight to welterweight.

Arum said although he has deals in principle with Pacquiao and Margarito, there is no site yet, mainly because Margarito is not licensed in the United States following the hand-wrapping scandal that engulfed him before his fight with Shane Mosley in January 2009. Before the fight, illegal pads coated in a plaster-like substance were found in Margarito's hand wraps. His hands were re-wrapped and Mosley wound up knocking out Margarito, who later had his license revoked by the California State Athletic Commission. Javier Capetillo, Margarito's former trainer and the man who wrapped his hands, also had his license revoked.

With the revocation period up earlier this year, Margarito returned to win a fight in Mexico and recently applied for a license in Nevada, where Arum hopes to stage the fight. However, Nevada officials declined to rule on his application, directing him to first go back to California, which has yet to listen to his appeal.

"Frankly, my desire is to keep the fight in the United States," said Arum, who said there is interest from Abu Dhabi and Monterrey, Mexico, in hosting the fight. "Manny would like to fight in Mexico to save on the taxes. He saves 30 percent. But we have a number of states we are talking to that will listen to Margarito."

Arum said he and Margarito's attorney are hoping that Nevada will reconsider his application and give him a one-fight license to face Pacquiao in an HBO PPV fight that would be a boon economically to a struggling city.

"There's a lot of pressure on me to get it done in Las Vegas from everyone in town," Arum said. "The fight is important to the city. But I want it known that if it is not in Las Vegas, it's not because of Bob Arum. I live there and I feel the town needs this. It's not because of me if the fight is caused to go elsewhere."
