Margarito Sparmates Issue Warning

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
MANILA, Philippines — The four sparring partners of Antonio Margarito have a message to Manny Pacquiao: Margarito can be hazardous to Pacquiao’s health.

A month before Pacquiao and Margarito get it on at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Cleotis Pendarvis, Ricardo Williams, Austin Tour and KC Martinez intimated to the on-line edition of The Ring magazine that Margarito poses serious risks to the Filipino pound-for-pound king.

“He’s definitely not (a) shot (fighter),” said Pendarvis, who has a 10-3-2 record with four KOs, after sparring with Margarito

in Oxnard, California, site of Margarito’s training camp.

“If he was shot, he wouldn’t have been able to do what he did today. He did 10 rounds with four talented young sparring partners. We’re not old journeymen that he can beat up on. We can fight,” said Pendarvis, who also once helped Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in their own preparation for Pacquiao.

Williams, a 2000 Sydney Olympics silver medalist, was awed by Margarito’s ability to take a shot.

“He takes a good shot,” said Williams, who has a 16-2 card with nine KOs.

Even the fast-rising Trout, who packs a 21-0 mark with 13 KOs, has seen tremendous inroads in Margarito’s skills.

Having spared with Margarito two years ago, Trout said Margarito has learned how to pick his punches, a trait that is likely to work wonders against somebody as accomplished and gifted like Pacquiao.

But just about everyone sang the same tune when asked about the vaunted pressure that Margarito applies during a fight.

“You start to feel it by the second round. It’s real,” said Trout.

Pendarvis was blunt in his assessment.

“With Margarito you feel the pressure from the first round because he throws eight shots in one combination.”

Williams felt it the moment “he gets you with a good body shot.”

But Pendarvis, who claimed they were told to take it east against De La Hoya and Hatton during training camp, summed it all up.

Arum: Margarito poses very unique dangers

MANILA, Philippines - Boxing promoter Bob Arum said Saturday that Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao should step up his training to dodge the "very, very unique dangers" posed by Tijuana's tornado, Antonio Margarito.

"He better step up his training because this guy (Margarito) poses very, very unique dangers," Arum said as soon as he arrived in Manila on Saturday morning.

Arum, who was scheduled to watch Pacquiao's sparring session on Saturday afternoon, said that Margarito is currently in "tremendous shape" and he expects the Tijuana Tornado to push himself to the edge during the last stages of his training for the November 13 super welterweight fight in Texas.

"If you are Margarito and this had happened to you. You've been suspended in boxing for a relatively long time and now you get the opportunity to be in this world stage, you're gonna kill yourself to prepare," the boxing promoter said.

Arum added: "He is in the best shape I have ever seen. He would be a big danger for any welterweight in the world."

However, the boxing promoter said that despite Margarito's current condition, he still believes that Pacquiao's speed and punching power will prevail during the fight.

"Pacquiao is something special. No matter how big they are, Manny Pacquiao can handle them," Arum said. "Manny has to be able to utilize that incredible speed that he has together with his ability to punch with two hands." – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News

Antonio Margarito's Motivation

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Antonio Margarito is at a crossroads of his career. Disgraced, banished and for the most part forgotten, the once violent force people knew as the 'The Tijuana Tornado' was reduced to a whimper after his devastating loss to Shane Mosley in January of 2009, and even more devastating year-long suspension from boxing after getting caught with illegal handwraps. Let's be honest here; Margarito wouldn't have been tapped to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13 if he weren't a Top Rank fighter.

Consider this Bob Arum's biggest daylight robbery in recent memory. But hey, from a business standpoint, you got to give it to Arum for pulling this one off. He's getting all he could get out of a fallen stock and ironically, as much as we all know this isn't the best match-up Arum and crew could've gotten Manny Pacquiao, this might very well end up as the highest selling fight of the year. Call it savvy. Call yourself suckers. But you can also credit Pacquiao's history of providing action-packed and entertaining fights as well and Margarito's come-forward-warrior-like-fighting-style that has endeared him to Mexican fans and boxing fans in general as he's provided wars every time he steps in the boxing ring.

If Margarito's 6-1 betting underdog status isn't enough to indicate how the public perceives his title fight against Pacquiao will go, only thing anyone has to do is research the early returns from boxing experts regarding their predictions for this fight. If I may cut to the chase, nobody truly believes Margarito will beat Pacquiao. Moreso, a lot of people expect the 'Pound for Pound King' to knockout Margarito or batter him in a 12-round unanimous decision win.

When Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach told Max Kellerman during his Face-off segment on HBO that he thinks Pacquiao will knock Margarito out in under 8 rounds, Margarito responded with an annoyed grin and looked to his corner man Roberto Garcia and uttered, "What does he see me, crippled or something?" Uhmm, I guess more like a proverbial piñata. Roach shot back saying he based his statement on seeing how Margarito fought in his last couple of fights. The consensus belief is that Margarito is a prodding and flat-footed target for the lighting fast Pacquiao all night long.

A lot of boxing fans assume and believe that Margarito has been using loaded wraps prior to fighting Shane Mosley and without them, he is simply a regular puncher. In his last fight against Roberto Garcia in Mexico last May, Margarito was only able to squeeze a 10-round UD after coming off sensational KO and TKO wins over Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto prior to losing to Mosley. At the time, Margarito was ranked anywhere from #3 to #5 in most publications' top pound for pound boxer list. Today, most boxing fans just want to see him get beat up in a poetic justice type of manner, and who better to do that than the sport's biggest and most likeable protagonist in Pacquiao?

Pacquiao eager to make up for lost time in training

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
So far, Manny Pacquiao has had something of a tumultuous training camp ahead of his junior middleweight showdown with Antonio Margarito in November.

Initially the seven weight world champion impressed his trainers teammates with his work ethic and how good his conditioning was given his relatively long absence from the ring and summer political campaign.

Quickly though, concerns were raised after reports of missed road work, frequent basketball sessions after training and regular trips from Baguio to Manila that left Pacquiao too tired to train effectively the next day.

A minor foot injury and later a short bout of flu exacerbated these worries, as did widespread reports that Pacquiao was looking sloppy and lethargic during sparring.

Easy opponent on paper or not, Margarito holds a big size and reach advantage as well as the fact that he is as hungry as he has ever been after his recent suspension.

Many even began to question whether Pacquiao was taking Margarito lightly. After all the odds favor the Filipino as highly as a six to one favorite, and even trainer Freddie Roach has said that Margarito isn't an opponent he is particularly concerned about. Also after so many weight climbs over the years, a further few pounds probably doesn't worry Pacquiao at this stage as much as it would most fighters fighting at a new weight.

The concerns also weren't helped by the fact that reports from the Margarito camp all indicate that the former welterweight champion is already in excellent shape and is apparently implementing his game plan for Pacquiao effectively against his sparring partners.

More recently though, Freddie Roach has stepped in to curb Pacquiao's extra curricular activities, as he often has in the past, and the training sessions have since been going more smoothly.

Manny is reported to know that he is behind schedule and is eager to catch up, and with a month left until the fight, still has plenty of time to catch up so long as not too much else goes wrong.

Even with Roach keeping a close eye on Pacquiao at the moment though, there are still distractions for him in his current location. The constant glare of the media, keeping up to date with political goings on and numerous appearance requests will likely continue to affect him to some degree.

Fortunately the team is relocating their training base to the Wild Card in Los Angeles on October 23rd, and it is there that the majority of the catching up will probably be done.

Moving the camp to the United States won't help much with the media glare in and around the gym, but it will serve to give Freddie Roach greater control over what happens outside training. Not to mention meaning an end to the long distance trips to congress.

Alan Prestige, Pitt: "Margarito will win if Manny doesn't step it up and work hard, he should be more worried about this than the Cotto fight"

Bill Simons, Columbus: "Margarito stil might be shot, so no mater what kind of hsape he's in he could be an easy fight. No trouble for Pacquiao even is he isn't training well"

I’m not trying to be disrespectful to (Freddie) Roach because I think he’s one of the best trainers in the world. I’m a fan of Pacquiao’s. But I know from being in the ring with De La Hoya and Hatton that he didn‘t fight them at their best.

Pacquiao camp heading back to Los Angeles around October 23rd

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
According to my sources Manny Pacquiao will pick up camp and head back to Los Angeles around October 23rd. If you're a Manny Pacquiao fan, this couldn't happen fast enough. There have been some bumps in the road over in the Philippines with Pacquiao getting sick, and with him tweaking his knee while playing basketball. Trainer Freddie Roach had to slam the doors shut on the gym due to excessive distractions from hundreds of fans that were smothering the gym.

In Los Angeles, Roach always has a much firmer grip on things and can better dictate the rules. Pacquiao is scheduled to square off against Antonio Margarito on November 13th, in Dallas, TX. His opponent, according to reports, is having a monster training camp and is looking quite sharp thus far. He will need every inch of that sharpness on November 13th when he steps into the ring.

The seven division world champion Manny Pacquiao told this writer that the key to his victory will be his speed, "The plan is to use quick movement and to use my speed against Margarito. If I do that, I will win the fight." Pacquiao will need to be wary of Margarito's reach advantage. Margarito is not so much a power puncher and he usually wears down his opponents over time and finishes them off once they are tired and beat down. This will be a much harder task for him to accomplish Vs. Pacquiao though. Manny's speed, and supreme conditioning will be a high mountain to climb over.

I spoke with Stan Nichols, USA Boxing President (Southern Association), based out of Brandon, Mississippi and got his thoughts on this fight. Nichols firmly believes that Pacquiao will win and win convincingly, " Pacquiao will be too fast for him. Margarito doesn't move well enough. Manny will eventually get the better of him, and could even stop him." Nichols is no stranger to boxing himself. He sparred the great Roberto Duran back in the early 80's in Panama.

Roach is looking forward to getting back to Los Angeles. I can assure you of this, and once he is back they will be getting a lot closer to crunch time. The fight will be right around the corner, so the focus level will be higher. I will be in Los Angeles with my team to cover the rest of his camp, so keep it hear at Examiner and at 8countnews.com for fresh updates, and interviews with Pacquiao and the rest of the team.

Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach vs Cornelius Bundrage and Emmanual Steward for IBF Title?

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Wow two of the All Time Hall of Fame Coaches pitting their two fighters against each other for Cornelius IBF Jr. Middleweight Title. Why not? We know Manny will not attempt to move up past 154lbs. So why not end his career trying to unify the titles at jr. middleweight? He's already proved he can beat Miguel Cotto. The WBC is vacant, the WBO champion is Sergeii Dzinziruk which nobody has really heard of, but Cornelius makes it an interesting fight because of his Trainer Emmanual Steward.

Fight fans love a good fight even though alot of people would not give Cornelius "K9" Bundrage a chance against Manny but fight fans love it when you have "two" mastermind trainers. One thing you have to give K9 is that he has a punchers chance. It would be labeled "Speed vs Power" because that is exactly how it would turn out. Everybody loves punchers. Everybody loved Arturo Gatti, even though he had some losses, but they love his ability to knock people out.

Unify, Unify, Unify. Manny should really consider unifying the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO at jr. middleweight. He would go down as one of the all time greats if he can pull that off. Manny is getting older and alot of people have not realized it yet but Manny has been complaining about aches and pains here and there. Nobody really cares about the Politics that he is involved in. If he is not careful he will end up like Oscar Dela Hoya. Oscar went down hill when he became a "part-time boxer".

Manny Pacquiao vs Cornelius Bundrage. Freddie Roach vs Emmanual Steward. That would make for an awesome HBO 24/7 not so much as to watch those guys train, but to see the strategies that these two great trainers would come up with. I know that both fighters wouldn't mind putting it on the line, but are the trainers willing to put their Pride on the line to see who is the better trainer that night? Stay tuned because you never know what can happen in boxing. Remember you heard it here first.

The All-Knowing: On The Pacquiao-Margarito Buildup

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
Conflicting reports concerning Manny Pacquiao and his training camp are surely part hype. Most folks understand that. So why get so worked up over it? Some have taken to deriding fairly tame stories emerging from the Philippines lately with the kind of bite forum beasts confuse with rhetoric.

Big fight ballyhoo goes back to the earliest days of boxing when there were no internet hacks around writing about how thick Pacquiao might let his moustache grow before fight night. Doc Kearns, Joe Jacobs, Jimmy Johnston, Joe Gould, and Dan Morgan types no longer exist to really put some pizzazz into promotional showmanship. Instead, we are stuck with tales of colds, pick-up basketball games, and sparring sessions—the prosaic stuff most cyberspace dreams are made of.

Still, there those who find even these reports irritating. Some people are never going to be happy with anything attached to the Pacquiao-Margarito bout because of overriding moral concerns. (Watch how many of these same moralists wind up ordering the fight. Unless, of course, they download an illegal stream, which is worth two or three hearty chuckles in itself.)

In addition, there is an awful lot of knowing out there these days. Everyone knows Andre Dirrell is feigning injuries. Everyone knew Mikkel Kessler was, too. Just like they all knew that Alexis Arguello was murdered. And everyone knows Margarito first loaded his hand wraps as a toddler–which made it hard for him to grasp his milk bottle–and they all know who twisted an ankle legitimately, and, like the Shadow, they also know what evil lurks inside the hearts of men. These preternatural beings, who ought to audition for a spot on “The Psychic Detectives,” have made sure to share their powerful insights on nearly every facet of the Pacquiao-Margarito buildup despite the fact that these reports are normal for any fight of a certain magnitude.

As for Pacquiao, he appears to be more distracted than ever. Never one to choose peace and tranquility leading up to a fight, Pacquiao has now added some congressional duties to his list of commotions. (All that seems to be missing is for someone to smack Michael Koncz around.)

Whether or not any of this affects his performance against Margarito remains to be seen. What most ranting moral arbiters fail to realize—despite their apparent ESP—is that there will be an actual prize fight taking place on November 13th, and when the bell rings, anything can happen. Margarito, after all, is not Peter McNeeley. He is a fighter–a disgraced one, no doubt–with a substantial body of work and a slew of accomplishments. This separates him from any number of boxers who duck through the ropes these days and should be enough to dispel the notion that his bout with Pacquiao is some sort of set-up. After all, set-ups are on sick display in boxing more often than it rains on Mount Waiʻaleʻale. If an expert barker cannot tell the difference between a set-up and a boxing match, should someone take away his keyboard? This is not to make any claims about the inherent competitiveness of the matchup. Maybe Pacquiao flattens Margarito in a mere 20 seconds. If so, it will be because he is the superior fighter, not because Margarito is a pushover.

Margarito may or may not deserve to be permanently barred because of his previous transgressions, but once he answers the opening bell, he will be trying his hardest to win. Although there are many who might disagree on the basis that they just happen to know otherwise.

Champ goes through high-intensity interval exercises: Pacman steps up training

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
MANILA, Philippines - For more than an hour, under the hot morning sun, Manny Pacquiao yesterday did some strenuous exercises that would have made an ordinary athlete faint.

Pacquiao trained at the historic Rizal Memorial track oval, supervised by his strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, who said it’s about time for the boxer to step up.

“We still have four to five weeks to train and it’s time to turn it up. This is the first day of turning it up,” said Ariza of the 31-year-old superstar gearing up for a Nov. 13 fight.

Pacquiao burned rubber with his speed drills, shadow boxed and did hundreds of crunches, but was even more impressive with the lung-busting interval strength exercises.

Interval strength training, also known as high-intensity interval training or HIIT, consists of intense repetitions of exercises like jump squats, plyometric pushups or dumbbell swings.

Rest periods, some lasting only 10 seconds, are sometimes spent doing less intense workouts. In short, HIIT was formatted to increase cardio and strength, and wear you out fast.

Even strong athletes normally fall to the ground to catch their breath after trying HIIT for the first time, and would feel the effects the following day, their bodies sore and aching.

Pacquiao skipped gym work yesterday afternoon to be in a meeting with President Aquino and be able to spend a couple of hours in Congress, and probably catch up with some of his duties.

Pacquiao left his training camp in Baguio City last Saturday, and led close to 120,000 runners in a cause-oriented footrace the other day. He was scheduled to return to the City of Pines last night.

Ariza said eveything’s in place, despite the fact that Pacquiao seemed to be taking it easy, playing basketball in Baguio almost every night, and opting to skip roadwork the following morning.

Last week, he also skipped his gym session because of some viral infection. But Ariza, and chief trainer Freddie Roach, said it’s all part of the camp, and things will get more serious from hereon.

“If we started too soon Manny would have been burned out by now. Manny sure knows how to pace himself. After this, we head back to Baguio. We’re turning it up now,” said Ariza.

Margarito training like a mad man ahead of Pacquiao fight

Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao vs Margarito, Pacquiao vs Margarito Coverage, Pacquiao vs Margarito News, Pacquiao vs Margarito Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Margarito Updates
WASHINGTON, D.C.: Training for the fight of his life, Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito will step up his sparring to 10 rounds this week, up from the eight-round schedule he had every other day last week.

Robert Garcia, Margarito’s chief trainer, said that the Mexican-American brawler is so focused on his preparations, he has not missed any of his tough daily routines—one hour road work Monday to Saturday, and at least two-hour gym workouts in the afternoon, including sparring with four different sparmates every other day.

“I’ve never seen a fighter train this hard,” Garcia told The Manila Times by phone from Oxnard, California. “He’s pushing himself to the limit and we expect him to be in the best shape ever for his fight with Manny Pacquiao.”

“Last week we were doing eight rounds every other day, but on the last day of sparring, Tony wanted an extra round so he went nine rounds. Next week we’re ready to go 10 rounds,” said Garcia, with just four weeks before the November 13 Pacquiao-Margarito showdown at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

He said that Margarito trains Monday to Saturday and takes Sundays off, almost the same routine as Pacquiao’s.
Garcia said that Margarito knows what it takes to be up against Pacquiao, considered the the best fighter in the world pound-for-pound.

“Tony [Margarito] has very high respect for Pacquiao, but we are not intimidated by him. We know he is fast and he has power, and we are preparing for whatever he brings to the table,” said Garcia, who is best remembered by Filipino fight fans as the trainer of Filipino world champions Nonito Donaire Jr. and Brian Viloria.

He said that their answer to Pacquiao’s speed and explosiveness is to keep him under constant pressure from the opening bell.

“Margarito will get hit, but he can hit back as well. I know [Pacquiao’s trainer] Freddie Roach is devising strategies for Pacquiao, but we have our own strategy. We’ll see. The better man wins” said Garcia, a former super featherweight (junior lightweight) world champion.

“That’s why boxing is so exciting because it is full of surprises, and I think we are ready to shock the world on fight night,” he added.

Ready for war

If Margarito’s almost daily one-hour road work are any indication—two days in the beach, two days in the park and two days in the mountains—the Tijuana Tornado is ready for a long night.

He said that a key component to their preparation is improving Margarito’s defense by moving his head and keeping his hands up all the time.
Garcia said that they want to take Pacquiao to the middle rounds, gradually break his game and then stop him in the 10th or 11th round.

“But when you put Margarito and Pacquiao in the same ring, you can’t really say what to expect,” said Garcia. “One thing I’m sure of, Tony has a big heart, he knows the stakes and he’s ready for war.”

Garcia has nothing but good words for Roach, who he said is the best trainer in the world today.

“Freddie is a real professional. My fighters and I have worked with him during workouts at Wild Card Gym and we have no complaint,” he said. “This fight against the best fighter in the world and the finest trainer in the game is a real challenge to us.”

The 35-year-old trainer also has very high regard for Pacquiao and what he has done for his country.

Garcia said that he has been to Manila twice—first when his top fighters Donaire and Viloria scored convincing wins on April 19, 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum, and again in January.

“I like the Filipinos. They treated me well when I was there twice,” Garcia said. “Maybe they will hate me when we shock the world on November 13. But it’s my job [to train Margarito to win], nothing personal, really.”

Antonio Margarito's Filipino Fan Favors Him Over Manny Pacquiao

Elie Seckbach, the Embedded Correspondent, brings his exclusive video reporting to FanHouse. Check back regularly for more videos.

As he prepares in Baguio City of his native Philippines under four-time Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach, WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) is the pride of his nation heading into his Top Rank Promotions, HBO pay-per-view televised Nov. 13 clash with ex-titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown.

But as Margarito trains for their bout in the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy run by his trainer by the same name, the Mexican-born fighter has the support of at least one Filipino fan who believes that he will defeat Pacquiao and prevent him from earning his eighth crown in as many different weight divisions.

That fan is Master Garcia, who is not related to Robert Garcia, who runs a martial arts studio adjacent to the boxing academy. FanHouse spoke exclusively with Master Garcia, a martial arts instructor who also trains the USA National Team.
