WBC sanctions Pacman-Margarito

The World Boxing Council received a request from Top Rank Inc. to approve the bout between Manny Pacquiao and Mexican fighter, Antonio Margarito, for the WBC Superwelterweight world title, to be held at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium this coming November 13th. The voting in favor of the fight was unanimous by the Board of Governors. The title was vacated when former world champion, Sergio Martinez, decided to do so, after winning the WBC Middleweight world title when he defeated Kelly Pavlik last April 17th. Pacquiao-Margarito will take place exactly one week after the 48th WBC Annual World Convention to be held in Cancun is closed.

Pacquiao would be stupid not to fight Margarito

I just read an article about Manny Pacquiao written by a guy who quite often goes negative in most of what he writes. This so called writer (who's name is not worthy of mention) has very little nice things to say about anyone in this sport. Usually he attacks those who are overweight, which solidifies the degree of hypocricy he carries within his own 300 pound frame. This guy can't stand the fact that Manny Pacquiao has agreed to fight Antonio Margarito, and he can't stand that some boxing writers are not taking Manny to task for doing so.

Boxing is a business and a sport, but to those professionals that are in the ring, it's a business first. Obviously Manny would rather have fought Floyd Mayweather, but as we all know that fight is not going to happen...yet. Oh wait, didn't I read somewhere that this fight was a "Done Deal, and all that was needed was the signatures from the fighters on the finalized contracts?" This so called breaking news came from a boxing site that never actually goes to fights, and in reality has no real sources to name. I'm guessing that Top Rank would probably answer their calls if they actually went to Top Rank fights. And hey, you never know, maybe Manny Pacquiao would ACTUALLY answer their call from across the pond if they actually had something nice to say about him. Of course us "groupy writers" don't have that problem, we "groupy" type guys get the big interviews, and the big names because we actually show some respect once and awhile.

It's the commission in Texas that should get cracked on, not Manny Pacquiao. Why the heck wouldn't Manny Pacquiao want to grab 15 million dollars against a bigger, slower Antonio Margarito? What? Pacquiao should save the sport of boxing by refusing to fight Margarito? Get real, Margarito would just fight someone else if Manny passed on him. It's not going to save the sport by refusing to fight Antonio Margarito. What would have helped the sport is if the Texas commission denied his request for a license to fight in the first place.

If you want to get pissed off at someone, get pissed at Bob Arum and the Texas Commission for pushing this fight through. Don't get mad at Manny Pacquiao for accepting an easy fight for 15 million dollars.

Fan-Boy Journalism & the Making of a Super Fraud

There have been many journalists coming forward in protest of this fraud that is coming our way in November. Manny Pacquiao is in preparation for his high profile showdown with the hands of plaster, Antonio Margarito. Although the journalists are mostly against this fight, and rightfully so, you do find those actually for it or going with the “we can’t stop it, so why fight it” mentality. We may not be able to stop this from happening but if nobody rents it, then we will prevent the next and send a big message to the crooks running this show.

I was sent an article on a website that obviously is not too selective with their writers. The big problems with Internet journalism are the Internet journalists, or what passes for them. This one article from a “writer” so tightly attached to the back side of Manny Pacquiao wrote an article praising the Filipino fighter and approved of the Pay Per View.

I read the article and was thoroughly disgusted. Am I the only one that notices that most of these people that claim to be journalists are not impartial at all? This article was not from an isolated journalist. There are a lot of them out there.

What most call “fan-boys” write Pacquiao article after Pacquiao article, over and over and over again, and never anything negative. The subject is a popular one and merits coverage, but if you are just there to say that you have a crush on the “PacMan,” you should probably write that in your diary and not a so-called boxing or news website.

The boxing community should unite to fight this pay per view and Pacquiao’s decision to face a known cheater, but there are those out there that have a financial interest in the fight going forward, the Manny Pacquiao blind followers that will support him no matter what, the writers that want Manny to give them a thumbs up and the conditional love from the blind followers of the Filipino fighter, and the uninformed.

I assume that the PPV will make money because those Latin Fury PPVs are selling and this fight is much bigger than those and with the promotion pushing it, you have to imagine that it will make money and that is why Pacquiao is fighting and that is why Bob Arum is making it happen. And who can forget about Texas giving Margarito the right to fight. Money, money, money…that is what this fight is all about, and a guy that loads his gloves is going to laugh all the way to the bank. Protest it.

Lights Out at UFC 118

After 15 seconds, former middleweight, super middleweight, and cruiserweight champion, James Toney was on his back and done for the night. He wasn’t able to do anything…but it wasn’t a surprise. He walked around the ring nonchalantly and confidently but Randy Couture easily took Toney off of his feet and to the floor. He mounted him and began pounding him with punches. Couture began choking him out and eventually got him to submit. So much for those saying Toney was too tough to submit.

People made a big deal about the 237 pounds that Toney weighed in at, but he could have came in at 500 pounds and it wouldn’t have made much of a difference. He didn’t have the tools to compete with a guy like Randy Couture and realistically, he wouldn’t fair well against anyone with average MMA skills. He is a boxer, plain and simple and they do not do well in the world of the MMA.

After the fight, Toney stated that he just got caught and would be back, but I sincerely doubt it. The UFC may put him back in there to get him to submit after 3 minutes again, but much like boxing, his marketability is long gone already with the UFC. Does anyone really think that he is going to be able to do anything positive inside the cage? He’s too old and not experienced enough with mixed martial arts to win fights.

Toney is a tough guy and was a great boxer, but that doesn’t translate into mixed martial arts success. It’s like saying: “He’s great at tennis, so he will dominate baseball.” They both involve instruments to hit balls, but they are vastly different. The same thing with boxing and the MMA…two different games all together.

Mikkel Kessler Out of the Super Six

The super middleweight Super Six Tournament on Showtime has suffered a blow with the drop out of one time favorite, Mikkel Kessler. Many are calling for Lucian Bute to take the spot, but he will most likely wait for the winner and continue fighting outside of it.

Kessler was set to face Allan Green next and now Green will be slated to fight a new opponent. No opponent has been named yet, but there are rumored negotiations going on with numerous replacements. It will be interesting to see what fighter takes the open spot.

MARGARITO BLASTS DE LA HOYA, CALLS HIM A SISSY

Antonio Margarito is getting ready to fight Manny Pacquiao, but took time to blast Oscar De La Hoya and his company Golden Boy Promotions during an interview with TV Azteca.

"I don't know what he has against me, I really don't understand, what I do know is that he had a big influence in the California State Athletic Commission with everything he said against me, I am upset because he talked too much and said some nasty things and he has a shady past himself that most of us know about," said a very upset Margarito to the Mexican TV.

But if that was not enough he also sent a challenge to the Golden Boy. "I hope he takes off the fishnet, stop acting like a sissy and fight me, if you have something against me then get in the ring and fight," said Antonio who recently got a license to fight in Texas against pound for pound champion Manny Pacquiao.

"I will knock Pacquiao out, and show the world that I am back, this is the fight of my life and Manny will be in for a tough night, I wont quit like De La Hoya did."

Antonio's anger toward De La Hoya is nothing new, he challenged Oscar for many years trying to make a name off De La Hoya's fame and never got the fight.

'Margarito stronger, bigger for Pacman'

MANILA, Philippines - Antonio Margarito’s chief trainer Roberto Garcia yesterday said his ward will use his brute strength and height advantage against Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao even as he expressed confidence of Margarito’s victory in their upcoming fight in November in Texas.

“Margarito has the strength, the power, he’s hungry to be the best and prove everybody wrong. He’s the bigger man. He will get hit but he will just keep coming and coming and Pacquiao will get tired of just having Margarito on him and landing good shots and eventually you start landing good shots and start breaking him down,” Garcia told Dennis Guillermo of The Examiner.

“I honestly see a very big chance of us pulling it out,” he said.

Margarito has been training in earnest for the keenly awaited Nov. 13 showdown where Pacquiao is eyeing an eighth title in the super welterweight division (154 lbs). The fight, however, is set at a catchweight of 151 lbs.

Meanwhile, Garcia said he’s not having second thoughts on joining this week’s press tour for the big fight.

Garcia, who has his hands full handling Margarito’s training, said he’d be there despite the fact that he’s now busy working on the upcoming bout.

“I’ve been watching a lot of Manny Pacquiao’s fights. I’ve been studying him everyday,” said Garcia, also the current trainer of excellent fighters like Nonito Donaire Jr., Brian Viloria, Steven Luevano and Joan Guzman.

The press tour is set this week with stops in Los Angeles, New York and Dallas. Then both fighters part ways, and head into training, just a little over two months left before the anticipated showdown.

Garcia, the former world champion, said the more he studies Pacquiao, the more he likes their chances of winning.

“Margarito never stops training. After his fights he takes a few days off, maybe a week off but then he goes back to the running and back to the gym right away. He’s not back in my gym yet. We start our press conference here on Tuesday in LA and then go to New York, finish up in Texas, but following that we will start training camp. That would be 10 weeks before the fight, I think that would be enough,” said Garcia.

Enough to put Margarito in top shape. But will it be enough to beat Pacquiao?

The Gen. Santos native and now a Saranggani representative was scheduled to leave for LA last night for the press tour, and a chance to hook up with his own trainer, Freddie Roach, to probably discuss their initial plans against the 5-foot-11 Margarito.

And fly back home right after the press tour.

Roach will come to Manila along with sparring partners Rashad Halloway and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who may be just as tall as Margarito for training that starts on Sept. 20.

Pacquiao can train anywhere he wants, but prefers somewhere near the House of Representatives so he won’t be able to miss the afternoon sessions in Congress.

'He wasn't Margarito when he fought Mosley': Exclusive Interview w/ Margarito trainer Robert Garcia

As promised, here is my full interview with Antonio Margarito's trainer Robert Garcia who took over Javier Capetillo after the latter's suspension over Margarito's hand wrapping controversy prior to his fight against Shane Mosley in January of 2009.

Check out the video below as Garcia revealed his reasons on taking on the disgraced Margarito. The well-spoken Garcia also talked about Margarito's Texas boxing license, the California commission mess, his game plan against Pacquiao and several other topics relating to their showdown in Dallas on November 13.

dSource - Good day Robert, thank you for taking my call on such short notice.

RG - No problem.

dSource - Alright, let's get down to business. Congratulations on Antonio Margarito getting his license in Texas, and what's your thoughts on that?

RG - You know, Texas did the right thing. He had his suspension in California for a year. A year went by. He (Margarito) respected the decision California had made and now this fight is happening. I believe California should've done the same thing but they decided not to so that's why Bob Arum and Top Rank went to Texas and is having the fight there.

dSource - You're one of the top trainers in the game right now. Tell me why you decided to take on Margarito who was coming off a very controversial situation and do you really believe he had no clue regarding those hand wraps from Capetillo?

RG - That's the reason why I did it. If you've fought before and if you've trained fighters, you know how the system works. People can comment and say that he's a cheater and he should've known, well I've fought 37 professional fights and my father was my trainer at the end of my career I had another person wrapping my hands, not one single time did I question the wrapping. I never asked what's in the wraps -'can I feel', 'can I see what's going on' - not one single time. 37 fights and I never questioned. Now that I'm a trainer, I've trained world champions like Steven Luevano, Brian Viloria, Nonito Donaire, Joan Guzman, I've wrapped so many times and again you know, not one single fighter have asked me that [...] I know that little by little we'll get back and maybe with good wins and good performances, people will come back and believe in him and believe that yea, there's a possibility that the fighter does not know what's going on in the hand wraps when the trainer is wrapping them.

dSource - Let's talk about the California hearing. They brought up the training and sparring license. Is that common and what do you think about that?

RG - You know what, it's the first time I ever heard about it and everybody I talked to, all the reporters, all the trainers, everybody was just laughing about that you know because it's something they just brought up. Obviously they were prepared and they already knew that they weren't gonna license him and make us feel bad with the laws they presented to us which like I said not one single person there knew about it and not one single person in the state of California know about it- having to have a license to spar. I guess they were prepared for that. They already knew their decision. I don't even know why they had him show up if they already knew their decision, but hey, they did that and now it looks like California will take another year before they can try him again.

dSource - How is Antonio doing right now? Have you guys started any training at all for the Pacquiao fight?

dSource - There's some sentiments out there by fans that it's almost as if they're writing Margarito off against Pacquiao. What are your thoughts on that? I personally think it's going to be a war and by no means is Pacquiao a sure win.

RG - Like I said you know, after what happened with Margarito and the hand wrap thing, people just didn't like him or didn't like what he did so they just don't give him any chance. They think that (illegal hand wraps) was why he won his fights. What I learned from Margarito the last camp he was with me: He's a hard worker. He trains like it was his first world title opportunity. He trains harder than anybody. Man, it's unbelievable the way he runs and in the gym, so that's going to be a big advantage. He will be ready for the fight. Plus, I've been watching a lot of Manny Pacquiao's fights since his first losses, to Morales, to his last few wins. I've been studying him everyday, so I honestly, honestly see us having a big chance of pulling it out. Margarito is a bigger man. He has a big heart, he's got condition, he's got a good chin. Even though he lost to Mosley, people think that Mosley beat him up, people don't know him. The way I see Margarito, he had to come back down to 147, he had a hard time. Just walking to the ring you could see it in his face, it wasn't Margarito against Mosley. I think right now Margarito would beat Mosley.

dSource - What do you think is Margarito's best chance to beat Pacquiao? What does he have that might give Pacquiao a hard time?

RG - Margarito has the strength, the power, he's hungry to be the best and prove everybody wrong. He's the bigger man.
